this happen to me a couple
this happen to me a couple months back on my surf rod. I had shoved it down to much. What I did was wrap the joint with a cloth and poured hot water over it. And leave it for 2-4 mins. And just yanked it apart.
Don't know if it spoils the rod. But I wouldn't do this with an expensive rod.

Can vouch for the hot water
Can vouch for the hot water method, have had to do it a fair few times on my 13ft rod. Being worried about the epoxy coat though i wraped a rag around the area then poured the hot water onto the rag, so as not to directly pour it onto the rod.
I think there was a post on here a while back, where i got the idea from. Someone on that post suggested the opposite, by cooling. Initially tried that and didnt work, hot water now does it all the time for me.

man up
and twist it while pulling apart. Dont let the rod beat you by resorting to using hot water. Let the rod know who the boss is.
After you have got them apart, make sure the male section of the ferrule is clean and rub it with a candle or any kind of wax really - will make it easier to pry the rod apart next time.

had a 13ft rod stuck
had a 13ft rod stuck together for about 6months once. tried everything including hot water and having two blokes twisting while trying to pull it apart with no luck. ended up wrapping it in a bag of frozen peas for 10 mins and it came apart surprizingly easy

freezer
If your garage or tackle shop (or the drive in bottle shop ) has a walk in freezer just take the rod in there for 5 minutes or so. It will just slip apart easily.

Freezer or something cold
Freezer or something cold works the best as the cold makes the two section contract.

Don't know about the hot
Don't know about the hot water method but I've used something cold with good results, as Brody already mentioned the cold makes the sections contract.

Bunnings should have it
Bunnings should have it (Inox), or most large car parts suppliers. Got mine from AutoPro.

Get anything that has a
Get anything that has a grippy rubber, like a bunch of rubber bands then wrap it around the rod and turn it will come apart no problems, sort of like doing the car oil filter with the tool.
