Heading out of Two rocks in 3-3.5m swells ?dangerous

Was thinking of heading out of Two rocks this sunday arvo, wind predicted to drop right off but swells still 3-3.5m. Ive gone out of there heaps of times in 2-2.5m swell and it was OK at end of lead line where it gets to 9m deep, still had to watch for one or two that came up a bit quicker  but what about 3-3.5m swells?  too risky?   if so do you guys think Mindarie may be a better option?  any advice appreciated  cheers Dave

i've been out in 3.5, on a glass off. That was still hairy getting out of the marina, had to time it right but once we got to 30m it flattened out more. 3m with wind is, simply put, a no go. Youll get 5 minutes out and want to turn around.

Wed, 2016-05-18 17:40

if you do head out radio in to sea rescue that your about to cross 3 mile then radio in once safe and clear of breaking waves, same again when coming back in.

personally i wouldnt bother as the ocean will still be churned up real bad, i did try last year on a big 3m swell and couldnt find a safe passage north of marina. the whole bank was closing out as far as i could see, i no other boats headed south same day and made it through.

Always need to consider the

Thu, 2016-05-19 08:36

Always need to consider the swell period (distance between swells in seconds) as well as the swell height. This will give a good idea of the steepness of the swells.

A 3 metre swell at 8 second intervals will be steep where as a 3 metres swell at 18 second intervals will be gentle

most decent marine weather sites will provide swell period info

The only place I MIGHT (??) go is tight in Coburn sound. At least Garden Island will provide shelter. Come to think about it - Nah, comfort not worth it.

Don't be a damn fool

Fri, 2016-05-20 00:03

In swell of that size don't be a fool and put your safety at risk and that of others who may be called upon to put their lives at risk to save you should things go real bad for you, which in seas of that size are a very real possibility and probability.

I can't think of one fish in the sea that is worth putting your life at very high risk for.

 No disrespect intended Paul

Sat, 2016-05-21 14:15

No disrespect intended Paul H but an 8 sec swell is gutless compared to an 18 sec swell...

Way more power in a long period swell!!

So this basically means that a smallish swell with a long period will mean the wave height/power is signifigantly higher!!

I agree with the above though anyone that is on here asking questions about whether its safe or not safe def should not be going anywhere if they not confident.

LOL where you going to be

Sat, 2016-05-21 15:49

LOL where you going to be fishing/launching in a 6mtr swell @ 20?.....

I didnt realise we were worried about slap city?!?!

I thought we were talking about big sneaker sets cleaning you up as you trying to shoot a gap somewhere on the way out......

Short gutless large swell that break often is alot more predictible than a huge period beast....

I surf its what we look for when awaiting a big tow day to bother taking the ski's out....

In saying this i live in the SW, I cant speak for Perth area but its my experience in the SW......

Actually Timboon we are both

Mon, 2016-05-23 09:30

Actually Timboon we are both correct

a 3m swell is a 3m swell height remains the same offshore however will rise higher as it builds to break

your right long period swell will have more power/force when breaking and can catch some out due to the fact the breaking waves are further apart and they may stray into a dangerous position unawares.

I was referring more to offshore in deep water where swell is not breaking and a longer period swell will be more gentle (as in more of a gentle rolling swell than steeper short swell).

Offshore - I'd take longer period swell of the same size most days

Have fished plenty of big swells offshore here in SA (launching from protected waters) all drift fishing or trolling as you obviously don't want to snag your anchor and I only suggest it for the experienced.  You want to take a number of things into account including bottom topography of the local area.

pretty strange when your fishing with another boat and you only see them every tenth wave when your both on top at the same time.
