HELP!!! Impeller replacement!!

 Gday Guys

Started my 97 4 stroke 50hp Merc today and no water shooting from outlet!!

Dropped the 5 bolts to drop off leg but the leg will only move about 3 inches then won't budge!!

looks like it's stuck on the shaft that's closest to the boat!!

Am I missing something or should it pull straight out so I can access water pump??

EDIT

2 pictured added

1st is as far as I can drop leg

2nd finger pointing to where I thought u could access lock nut

Have you disconnected the gear linkage? The rod that connects the gear shifter down to the gearbox.

Also some engines have a bolt underneath where the trim tab is, so you need to undo the trim tab to get to the bolt underneath. (Make sure you mark the trim tab position before removing it).

The easiest way is

Fri, 2014-03-28 20:22

Mark what height the gear linkage lower nut is positioned in with masking tape. Then using two spanners separate the upper linkage nut from the lower linkage locking nut. Wind the main linkage nut upward in a clockwise direction to a point where the the 2x gear linkage shafts separate.

if you are still unsure the you tube is your best friend in this regard

 Most outboards the gear

Fri, 2014-03-28 20:28

Most outboards the gear linkage (front one) just slips into a spline but some the gear linkage goes up and down rather than rotates and has a clamp to join it.

The ones I have seen are accessable under the powerhead between the leg and transom bracket, you may need to put it in fwd or reverse so the clamp appears.

It shouldnt be inside the engine cover but underneath.

Put the lower unit back in place with a couple of bolts, and have someone put it in fwd/rev while you watch the front of the leg halfway up to see what is moving and look for where it is joined.

Sometimes the drive shaft spline wears into the end of the crankshaft which is a pain but if yours is moving 3" then its not that.

Leave it in gear

Fri, 2014-03-28 20:47

And then lowering the impeller housing over the new impeller then you just need to rotate the prop the same direction as what the gear is selected (so if you have selected reverse then spin the prop backwards when lowering the impeller housing)

 better still, why dont you

Sun, 2014-03-30 13:57

better still, why dont you put up a picture of the setup and outboard itself to make it easier for us to help you!

Especially the front of the mid leg where you would normally be able to see the gear linkage.

Normally that linkage will do one of two things while you flick it in and out of gear-

1/ rotate (normally just slips apart as you remove leg)

2/ goes up and down and is secured.

Id skip the Seloc ones as they seem to cover a vast range of engines?

There are a couple of sites where you can get the factory ones for $8.95US or so and immediate download-I have them for my F115 Yam and DF115 Suz

Didz I cant see on your pics, too dark and just looks like a silhouette to me unfortunately
