Help a novice jigga please

Would a DB combi jerk be a good rod to jig sambo's and dhus? Any recommendations around 300bux max. I'm a 90% breamer but have access to a 6.5meter ali and have a stradic 5000. Also what length leader do you run for sambo's? Dont jig enough to buy multiple setups just looking for a all rounder.  Cheers

Tough as rods, I used to high stick mine with 10 kgs of drag and grabbin the spool lol, couldnt break it, great allround boat rod, jiggin metals, placcys, live baitn, drift baitn, bottom bashin with bait, trollin skirts and xrap 15s/20s, even ok for casting. The new split grip model is a bit shit for trolling, just need something to protect the blank, no biggy. The stradic might get cooked if used on sambos too much tho haha. Should be able to fill the spool runnin a good 8ply PE3 thats around 50lb, and about 1.5m of 60lb fluoro leader should do the trick, just bench test knots. I use a 50 turn bimini in the braid to a GT knot and has never failed, Id be using a slimmer knot with that leader tho if youre guna cast with it. The Hypers are good value for money too, not sure if they are the same blank as the DBs. Look out for BCF 25% sales (as long as its in stock lol)

yeah i see the reel as the only problem especially if you want to chase sambos, no problem if its for dhus snapper baldies etc on jigs plastics but would suggest a bigger reel for lead

4000 Daiwa or your 5000

Sun, 2014-10-19 19:24

4000 Daiwa or your 5000 shimano would be the best "allrounder", but unfortunately its not perfect. I was using a saltiga 5000 running 90lb and 120lb leader yesterday and was still getting buried!

A high end reel in those

Sun, 2014-10-19 21:08

A high end reel in those sizes will be fine, you'll get dusted a few times but you'll still get sambos in. My catalina 4000 running pe3 is my all rounder for jigging, have still caught fish to 30kg on it, I just bring out the saltiga 5000 if I get bricked a few too many times, and even still its sometimes not enough! The 4000 daiwas and 5000 shimanos are just the right size/weight to jig with all day without wearing you out too

Recently bought a Jigging

Recently bought a Jigging Master Fallings ultra light, all I can say is WOW! Bloody beast of a rod. I run 2-3m of 50lb fluorocarbon leader on that outfit. I have 2 saltigas and 1 catalina and rate the catalina much higher than both my saltigas

Yeah i run the JM Three Kings

Yeah i run the JM Three Kings Special UL and they are a mint rod. Heaps of power and nice to use all day.

i have a 5000 stella on mine and it matchs perfectly. Your stadic would go sweet on a similar rod and if its not getting a belting week in week out from the sambos then it should still last a while. Just get it serviced each year and keep it well maintained.

Maybe Head into Oceanside and check out a few rods. Perhaps the new JM Ocean Devil rods for sort of mid range price wise.

 I wanted an affordable all

Mon, 2014-10-20 06:13

I wanted an affordable all rounder and went with the Stradic FJ 5000 and an ugly stick rod.  No problems yet.  Good snapper and dhu and small Sambos but havent hooked a monster yet :/ .  Run at least 4 metres of fluorocarbon leader.  I use 60lb onto pe3 rainbow braid. Good luck.

 +1 on the 4000-5000 setup.

+1 on the 4000-5000 setup. You can land big sambos on a 4000 saltiga no dramas at all. I run a 2m leader max, just make sure its fluorocarbon.

I was also looking for an all

I was also looking for an all round jig rod, and ended up going with a Major Craft Crosstage PE 2-4 matched up with a 6000 Saragosa SW, spooled with PE 3 Toray Super Strong.
Doesn't break the budget, as you can pick the rod up for about $200.
