help wanted

I just got a 4m cat with an offset 50hp Merc which seems reliable after
servicing. I have been out of Hillarys twice and on the Swan once in
the last week. I am a new inexperienced skipper with years of
experience in shore fishing but little open ocean fishing exp. Anyone
up for sharing some tips and helping me figure out what this boat's
limits might be? The only safetygear is two PFD and fire extinguisher.

The boat's limits change
The boat's limits change with the skippers!
Just take it easy for awhile, pick the good days and don't go too far (well you can't you don't have an eprib!)
You need at least the addition of some inshore flares.

nope but I am in the need of
nope but I am in the need of that...if anyone has any suggestions/old equipment? I hate the thought of new equipment for an old boat and one that's kind of a starter to learn what needs to be learned. The nav/comm equipment would be the same...to learn and then make a good purchase.

new equipment for an old boat
At the end of the day mate, we dont want anything bad to happen, but in the case that it does, thats the day you will be hoping you spent more on safety equipment than fishing equipment.. as the other guys have said, stay close enough to shore until your comfy even if you havent picked the right day and there is abit of swell, stay in close and have a feel for the ocean.. never underestimate the power of a small wave.. angles are everything..
today off bunbury/busso some guys left there fishing ground forgetting to pull their anchor, anchor hooked a reef and capsized there boat, next minute they being winched into a helpicopter..
p.s. oceanside tackle had the 406 epirbs on sale the other day.. that would be my first purchase if i were you.

time and confidence
time out on the water will give you more confidence in using the boat, always go on the cautious side and buy some local maps so in your mind you have a good idea what ground lays around , as a GPS will not tell you where the dangerous ground/areas are, ensure you get plenty of safety gear and anchors and rope.
Join a local radio club $ 35.00 per year and log in and out on every trip, also you can ask around the site for an yone who might want to go out and assist you in getting into boating. the ocean is a big place and needs respect.
Also learn to launch and retrieve your boat and ramp rukes which will start the day well. ENJOY
