Hervey Bay Offshore

The wife and i are heading over to Hervey Bay in the new year and will be staying on a large cat moored in the marina.

I was looking for info on fishing offshore as most of he stuff i could find was all land based.

Appreciate any info on what to target, gear i'd need to take etc.

Also got access to a dinghy so hoping to fing some crabs too.

I grew up there

But have lived over here for the last 20years. My dad helped put down the artificial reefs in the straights between woody and Fraser Island. It used be be good fishing there but I believe they have closed down a lot of the fishing in the straights now. We didn't have a big boat so we never ventured too far out deep from the bay. I do have find memories though of pumping yabbies (salt water type) on the exposed mud/sand bands and then casting off them in the incoming tide. You'd get some ripper sand whiting. Also you can/could use a cast net there so we used to get some nice prawns over off the banks of Fraser near the creeks that flow to the sea. There's been a little rain there so they might be a few about. Make sure you take some rid though as the sand flies will get ya. As for deep you'll get the tropical fish, reds coral trout and good estuary cod. If you can head further north to lady Elliot or out of 1770 there is plenty of good ground and (well used to be) plenty of good fish. Good luck

I was briefly in the HB area 3 years ago and went out with Hervey Bay Fly and Sports fishing. I had a great day out myself, not cheap but if i am ever back that way i will be looking him up.
The species variety is quite amazing.
Naturally the east coast has a lot more fishermen per square inch than over here, so don't expect to have it on your own. But then where i live i rarely see another boat.
