Ivce never had a Honda but they are pretty highly regarded. The original 4 stroke outboard. Power head is an adaption of the Accord motor from memory, and if they havent got that right youd know about it by now!

Because they are a bit more expensive than others owners tend to polarize somewhat like Etecs.

Yam/Suz/Merc owners seem to be a little more open to swapping.

Thing to remember though with an outboard of that age though is that its LACK of use that kills them rather than wearing out. Pretty hard to wear a good 4 stroke out as a rec boater but corrosion kills. Having said that Honda seems to be about as good as they get on coatings and metalurgy.

Personally not a big fan as they tend to be heavier and more expensive BUT they are bloody solid reliable motors, NO-ONE can argue with that.

Of all the second hand motors Honda would be the most likely survivor longterm I reckon.

My honda

Hi Nick,

I just bought a boat 3 weeks ago with a 130 honda 4stroke. 614 hours.

I had the same concerns as you have. I had a mechanic look over it and called a few dealers for some advice and had nothing but good reports from everyone. Everyone said if it has a full service history and has been regularly flushed it will last forever. The rescue boats have them on and most have over 4000 hours. Apparently the 4 strokes go and go and go. Like anything its a risk but i am very happy with mine and touch wood it goes forever.

I would just make sure you have someone fully look over it. Boats are meant to be used so if its a older boat and has a few hours thats not a bad thing as at least you know it has been used rather than sat in a driveway collecting dust. Dont always need to go for the lowest hours. PM me if you want to chat more.

Hope this helps,
