Hooked it, but what was it?

Hey people.

Went out on my Uncles boat last week and went to little island. Took my 15kg rod and my little flick stick for whiting and so on. Has 2kg braid on it and its probably a 2-3kg rod. First drop over the side i flicked the arm over and BANG got a few huge bites, then the rod bent over. From memory we were only in 7-8m of water. It was pulling under the boat and around the boat. If i tried to pull with my little rod it would have snapped and the line was already close to giving.

Every time i pulled i maybe got half a foot on it, and it pulled 10ft. I ended up losing line and i did not gain any. It didnt take off like a ray, it didnt fight like a ray, didnt really kick the rod around either, was just a weight. Felt like i had hold of a whale. After 35 minutes it went under the boat and the line hit the prop and i lost it. Was VERY upset.

I can not even think of what it may have been? Still scratching my head.....You can hook onto some pretty wacko stuff not far from shore...

There was a great photo of a decent Dhuie with a tiny whiting longshank in it's mouth on here a while ago. I think it was caught on a bit of prawn too!

Yep big fish on tiny hooks! Caught in 3m of water fishing for herring that snapper.

Your fish must have been big if you had it on for half an hour mate, but no idea what. I could only imagine a ray if it stayed under the boat? Maybe a huge nw blowie?

I've hooked a couple rays on

Fri, 2012-03-23 17:16

I've hooked a couple rays on the fly gear and they've done the same kind of thing just sat there cruising really slowly, not taking off because I couldn't put much pressure on the ray coz of the light line. I got an eagle ray in once and thought it was to easy so jerked the fly rod a couple times to wake it up and took off like a rocket lol. My guess a ray that wasnt quite sure what was going on lol

I was fishing with a whiting

Fri, 2012-03-23 21:55

I was fishing with a whiting rig with long shank hooks and squid. It would of had to of been huge, because that rod, even on a big snapper or jewfish, i would of still been able to gain SOME line.....
