HOW DO I CATCH COBBLER FISH?!?
Submitted by Almopickle on Mon, 2009-04-27 21:03
I was wondering if anyone could tell be how to catch Cobbler fish. Is there any special methods, is there a size limit? I've heard they are venemous too!? I am staying on a boat at the moment and i must have spotted about 20 different ones swimming around this evening but could not get one to take my offering of squid litterally dropped right in fromt of their noses!

They are not hard to catch. Just about any bait will entice them
Find a rock wall or te inside of a marina at night and you will have a fair chance of getting one.
Just be very careful when you hook one. They have spines near their head that will give you severe pain.

We go to Billy Goat Bay in Leeman
and Bob uses a giggie, tillie lamp and bucket, there is a size limit to cobbler (43cm or bigger) fully protected in the Swan/Canning River's till 2017 you must measure them from the back sting to the tail (not from the tip of the head to the tail) and can only take 4 per person per day. High tide is the best to caught them the way Bob does. Or put a tillie lamp over the side on a jetty/boat with prawns for bait. You can only catch them in Mandurah and the Ocean. This info from the latest Fisheries phamplet.

I think the marinas are part
I think the marinas are part of the ocean. As long as its not in the swan/canning system, its ok (subject to size and bag limits)

Colin I assume the marinas are classed as the ocean
at our launch/retrieve ramps on a clear (water) day you can see lots of under size cobbler, lots of tyres were put in the water and they lovel darting in and out of them. Seen some really good size mullett also and the never ending blowies.

Nice one lads, will have a good old crack at catching one! Sailing from Bunbury to Exmouth on the 18th of this month, so plan to have a lure out the back for the whole two weeks we have to sail up there. Just been up to Got One and bought a beefy rod and a shed load of gear! So expect i won't be bothering with the old Cobblers from now, fingers crossed for a few decent Tuna and some Spanish Makerel!

bloodworms
try bloodworms or river prawns, with a running sinker, swivel, short leader and a number 2 bait holder hook, this is what i used 2 catch them a few years ago in the swan river b4 they were protected, and i used 2 set the drag on free spool so they can run,and most of the time they hook them selves
