How far should you fill your spool?

Just wondering what the opinions are on how far you should fill your spool?

Im sure there are plenty of opinions out there and would be good to hear a few. I'm using mainly braid on overhead and spin.

Thanks in advance

 overhead it depends on how

overhead it depends on how much you want to spend and what depth your fishing. on a spinning reel you need to fill the spool to get better casting distance as there is a lot less resistance of the line peeling over the edge of the spool if you know what i mean. most people will put a fair amount of mono onto a spinning spool before the braid as generally it will take a whole lot more than you need on it. when you tie the mono to braid after the mono backing i would say maybe 300yds of braid would be sufficient unless you chasing biggggggg stuff thats likely to keep going

Im not fishing anything that would require more than 300m of line, I have backed all my reels with mono so the spools all look as if they are "full". Is it really necessary on an overhead? It obviously will have an effect on drag but is it enough to worry about?

wouldnt worry about the overhead and i dont think it would affect the drag either. only diff would be you would get a bit less line back on every wind of the handle

I would definitely put mono backing on all my reels if im fishing braid.
I think it stops the braid slipping as well?

but yeah with spinning reels, fill the spool as much as you can almost to the edge of the spool, like FF said, less casting resistance.
Just dont overfill, it can cause some nasty tangles.

it does matter on an overhead

if the spool is only half full you are not retreiving as much line as you would if it was full
