How many GWs will be caught
Submitted by fisharoo on Wed, 2013-12-11 20:24
Ok, from all the info I've gathered from all this shark topic is that the shark control measures is approved. Talking with my brother at work today we were putting bets on how many great whites will be caught this summer till April? I reckon maybe 2 GWs will be caught in the metro, he reckons heaps. Both of us agree that heaps of tigers and whalers will be caught.
just wondering if information of captures will be publicly available( not through rubbish news)? Or will we be able to go check out a big captured GWs when it's landed. Would love to take my kids there and check it out.
how many GWs do you guys reckon will be caught this summer?

The Premier said he was not sure what would happen to the shark carcasses, but assumed "they will be left out at sea".
i doubt this and think the fisherman will earn more from the taxidermide hide or jaws than they will catching them
and agree with you only about 2 gw being caught

any one that
if any one doesn't believe the cull hasn't started is kidding themselves , started about 3 months ago plenty will be caught and killed but not all catches will be reported , lots of pros have decided to cull them and its just by catch to them (apart from wrecking there gear)

I reckon 5-7 miscallaneous
I reckon 5-7 miscallaneous sharks such as tigers, whalers etc.
I am going 1 great white late in the season. I don't think the government authorities will publicly display the shark on purpose but on the same token I don't think they will be discrete enough to keep it from the hungry media that will milk it for all they can!!

WHITES
As long as its pro fishermen it may happen, if they delegate it to fisheries forget it, they are full of greenies and would not follow thru just look at the mischief they perpetrated at Gracetown recently WHERE THEY REMOVED THE BAITS AT NIGHT CONTRARY TO THIER BREIFS.

Why aren't they
putting those eco friendly to dolphins, turtles etc nets on all popular beaches, these nets are friendly to all fish and think they are made in WA/designed. From memory its going to be put out at Coogee Beach after all the redtape. I know it won't be safe for surfers/divers etc but all popular beaches should have them.
I don't believe in a cull as if you catch a big GW do they know its the one that has taken a soul or bitten on.

Could get you 3 in 12hrs out
Could get you 3 in 12hrs out of Cockburn Sound, easy.
There is a nice 4m job hanging around coventies, 3.5m at Point Peron
Pro fisherman are already in talks with the powers that be, someone I know has a meeting today.
Look, if you want to police fishing, then get fisheries and the police etc.
If you want to catch GW sharks use the pro fisherman, think its going to shock some people the amount of GWs out there.
More drum lines, kill the bloody sharks!

Im all for kill them and count them, The whole "we need more research story didn't tell us anything" If they kill a heap it will prove there are a lot out there and maybe they aren't endangered anymore.

Fisheries were never going to actually catch a shark.
Fisheries are not the type to catch things, never mind having to kill something. And that's fair enough.
A pro fisher man, well that's a whole different situation. They have developed a life time of skills to catch their intended target, cost effectively and humanly.
Its always been a no brainier, it's just now that the polies are scared that a young person enjoying the water will be taken. So now real action needs to be taken. Otherwise the political debate and media control will be removed for the pollies, control of situation will be lost, and proper action will have to be taken.
It will be an interesting 4 months that's for sure.

I dont believe they will get many bigger specimens
they are smarter than a bit of meat on a large hook with chain. Even big things need a bit of finesse sometimes. They are about 2 months to late to be starting this and they will probably get plagued by tigers and whalers
thats what i reckon anyway

Not sure
But they will get some. However I just hope not to many "innocent" sharks die as a result. Not that I am saying GW are guilty, just the targetted species.

I would be happy with the
I would be happy with the target of just GW.
There has been some incidence with 4 metre plus Tigers right in 100ft off the beach down at old Dunsborough in the swimming area. Obviously thats an issue for some of the locals where buckets kids swim.

I will be certainly watching
I will be certainly watching this one with interest.
Imagine if they catch a couple of big GW's per week for the next few months, right where we fish and swim!
If they take 100 GW's out of the water, will you feel safer?

Trophy hunters
This is just another knee jerk reaction by Barney Rubble and co and all it is going to do is bring out all the idiot indiscriminate trophy hunters to plunder and pillage.

And for all those indisriminate fisherman who plunder and pillage but cry when a shark cull is announced ...............

i must admit
there jaws are the only thing i like about them. thats 1 thing i have always wanted..hows many have been tagged in cockburn this year,,,a heap, have the fisheries put notices out on recent tagged sharks ? if they try they will catch, the one on news other night was coventry once again. fisheries could easy tag that one ,it has been there every day for 4 weeks ,and has been seen by many.the shark was bumping the boat while tim was pulling pots,(a little to friendly for me) he or she has def claimed the area.charged local diver also .no dought same fish.at least tag it with gps??? fisheries havent even tried.?got me,,i know 1 thing the bugger is in one of my fav dive spots ...i havent dived there all year,1 main point heaps have seen and fed it from there boat ,now it thinks every boat is food.

Caught
White pointer = 3. Big tigers =4. Big bronzies =6. Bull sharks = 0
Dollar value to the pro who catches them IF he is allowed to sell the jaws, approx. $10.000 for the jaws and around $250kg wet for the fins

I dont think the sharks are
I dont think the sharks are allowed to be sold. I think the sharks have to be buried out at sea.

Loop hole
Thought I saw a loop hole in that some will be brought ashore for "research".
What it comes down to in the end is finning, exactly the same as the uproar a few years back with vision of sharks being finned and dumped over the side on Jap tuna boats. At least we had a market for all sizes of sharks we caught when pro shark fishing up north, cut them up into no more than 8-9kg pieces, brine them, plastic wrap and freeze for export to Asia. If we had more time we could have included the stomach as well. all that needed was opening up, washing and drying. The claspers were a premium. There was a small market for the spines but cartage was more than the return.
