how many people are feeding the sharks of cockburn
Submitted by strike_zone on Tue, 2012-09-25 13:13
in this day and age of bag limits and fish for the future how many people out there are catching and losing 10 or more spawning pink snapper to the sharks in cockburn sound wouldnt commonsence tell you that maybe you should either stop fishing that spot for a while or move somewhere else seems to me to be some stupid fisherman out there i would like to hear what other people are thinking ?

The sharks are huntin the snapper but they are quickly leanin to hang near the boats coz its an easier feed. Gota be stupid usin a burley pot too. Guna be interesting couple of days on the sound this weekend with the weather and the last two days before the ban. Maybe fisheries should tow the sharks tail first out to sea! I thought the larger snapper werent as good eatin, not that id throw one back if I was lucky enough to catch one. Ill stick to huntin them on the 3 mile with no one in sight for miles

got to agree with strike_zone
we had a big hue and cry over sharks getting into the sambos a year or so back and now the same thing is happening to an iconic fish right on our door step, this is a prize fish that is available to the small tinnie owner and (brave, silly) yak fishermen and if all of us (repeat) don't act responsable then then I guess the authorities will step in and extend the ban season to ensure the breading stocks get a fair chance to do their think.Think about it what we are doing is making Mr/Mrs White a lazy fisher, all they have to do is go to the pinging sound wait for a snapper to show sign of distress then swim over to it and take a bite out of a fish that can't swim away, result Mr/Mrs white gets an easy feed (fisherman gets half of a prize fish if he's lucky) which he throws away then repeats the proccess what a waste.
We know how to find the fish
We know how to catch the fish
Let all of us respect the vuinerablity of these breading fish and give them a fair chance to bread in good numbers so that their future is well assured

pinkys
100% Agree with strike.. And please dont take this as me having a shot and any one but it is a fairly irresponsible act when you think about it . Pinky's are not the hardest species to locate at any time of the year so why we need to target them in the sound and loose so many to sharks puzzles me. The way to think about it is this, once the greenies find out the truth of whats going on with the fish sharking dilema they will proceed to protest again and get a longer ban put in place , and then the people who are fishing and donating these fish to the grey coats will be the ones who will jump up and down when tighter restrictions come into place again when all you will have to remember is that we are the reason they will do it .... pinks can be found in huge numbers on the 3 mile , ffb, direction bank and many other places where the sharks are not as much of a problem .And by all means please dont think you need a big boat to target them outside the sound because you dont, we regularly catch them of mindarie and the likes in a 12 ft tinny and this is done safely.. I really think we need to take a look and save what freedom we have left and not provoke any reason for further more intense bans / rules , atm were just waving a red flag infront of a bull.

From the photos at the D9
From the photos at the D9 last weekend, I would say we are odds on for the ban to be extended to cover all of September. Unless people change their ways, I tend to think this is necessary, as the current situation appears unsustainable.

Agree
I agree JohnF, i just posted some pictures from yesterday. When the guys showed me i couldn't believe how many boats were out there on a monday morning. I know the sound can offer people a chance to catch a big snapper that they may not normaly get, But to go out every day and bag out, lose fish to sharks and generaly take advantage of the spawning season is wrong.
My workers decided to take one fish each and call it a day. The comments they got from other boats was dissapointing. One guy asked why are you leaving just as the fish came on the bight ? he then claimed " my freezer is full to the top " yet he wanted to get his bag limit for the day.
I fished the sound way before they introduced any ban's and it was a free for all over the whole spawning run. I am glad that next week it will be over for a few months and give the fish a break.
I would like to see fisheries have the power to start the ban early if they see fish being caught in great numbers.

With the recent spate of
With the recent spate of shark attacks and the government acknowledging that there is an anomoly in what is going on, surely this would be a great time to sat tag these sharks and and to study their movements. I am aware that these tags are expensive and the wheels of government turn slowly so lets not turn this into government bashing. Just thought it was a great time to study these awesome creatures.
Cheers Mick

Does fisheries even have a clue as to how many snapper are aggregating there at the moment is it " how longs a piece of string "...or is there some sort of estimate would be a good starting point as to whether it's substainable is it a few thousand or a 100 thousand and also how many noahs are out there atm ...I presume with no cull their numbers are just going to increase ...how many kilos of snapper do they munch on daily ...do they realise theres a ban on

Numbers of boats
I work on the Kwinana strip and see the boats at the gravel patch all the time. On Sunday Morning 25ish boats and Monday morning I counted 18ish boats, eyes aren't as good anymore All in about a 50-100m area. Have seen 50+ in days gone by.

Well they put the whites on
Well they put the whites on the protected list what, 10 years ago? How big is a 10+yo white? Theyre only going to frequent our waters more and more until something gets done. Fair enough havin a go at fishos, fishin within their rights and combining with a sharks natural instinct, the snapper stocks are reducing more, but not just for the individual kills, but the potential spawn from each if it was female. The shark issues stem further than reduced fish stocks......I wouldnt feel safe swimming or diving anymore.
