I NEED HELP WITH SEA SICKNESS! I HAVE TRIED TABLETS THEY DIDN'T WORK....

 Hey everyone,

I have recently gotten into my fishing seriously again after a few months not wetting a line.

i fish entirely land based because i get horribly sea sick when out on the water. (last boat session i did was 12 hours of throwing my large intestine up)

i was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about sea sickness tablets, medication or even remedies that work for you.

i really want to get more into the deep sea side of things and make catching a large pelagic more of a habbit than a 1 in 1000000 chance from land.

any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

-Steve-

 Hey steve,

i used to get quite sick too. i used travacalm (I cant remember the spelling) but i reckon the best way to do it is in many shorter sessions and make sure yoiu take the maximum dosage and and take before you leave by a minimum of 30 minutes early. then dont travel too far from land and then back onto the water asap after you are sick. good luck with the pelagics and the home made burley

Yep +1 for Travacalm , Originals in a white pack with Blue writing. Take two an hour before you go out. I have suffered for years but used these in the last couple with great success. They do a Ginger one as well but I have found that to be not as effective.

I also become sea sick very easy. Since taking 1 tablet an hour before hitting the water I have never been or felt sick in any conditions, most times I'm the healthiest on the boat.
At the risk of pushing what's right and wrong: I can also enjoy a few beers with the crew without any side effects, well that's my prospective, the crew might say different.

Mate check this out. I got an overwhelming response when I posted a similar thread a couple years ago.

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/who-has-overcome-sea-sickness

So what has worked for me?
Travelcalm HELPS, but doesnt always stop me from feeling sick.
Ive had to stick to a certain type of fishing for me to not get sick and thats just using lures, plastics and jigs. Keeps my mind busy and focussed instead of just dropping a patternoster down and waiting for a bite, I would last about 5mins before feeling sick if I did that. I cant look down for too long, tying rigs and looking at the sounder, that gets me crook too. The best days for me are the choppy days where I cop a bit of ocean spray on the face as it keeps my refreshed. Regular small sips of any cool drink and small bites to eat every now and then also help. Just gotta keep persisting, im a hell of a lot better now than what I was when I posted that thread. These days even if I do get sick I can still keep fishing and dont feel like im going to die haha.

I used to get sea sick

Sat, 2014-03-15 16:52

when out in the boat with Bob.  I tried everything and the best combination for me was, 2 slices of toast with vegemite,  2 travel calm and two 400mgs of Blackmores Ginger Tablets, 30minutes before going out.

When in the boat every 3hrs take two more ginger tablets, they worked for me and never got sick.  I can't look down in the boat yuckie poo but with the travel calm and ginger tablets I didn't get sick.  I'd be the one wanting to stay out to fish longer not like before after 3hrs "Bob can we go home," and his answer would be one more drift then we'll head in by then berley was up and running hahahah even with 2 travel calm.

Some suffer and some don't, I

Sat, 2014-03-15 17:29

Some suffer and some don't, I suffer from it and it doesn't stop me but sometimes spoils the day a bit. I always take quells, more than recommended and try to keep my stomache full at all times. Sandwiches etc, but anything really. Even on week long trips I would be fine for the first 4 or 5 days then as I got more tired the sickness would set in. Keeping off the grog is a help of course. Obviously don't get caught out tying rigs for long periods with yuor head down and keeping your eyes on the horizon also helps a bit.
If your skippering the boat this seems to help as you can up anchor whenever you feel like it. Trolling is btter than anchoring for me.
More time on the water helps build up your resistance but for me it never goes. This is why Im reluctant to go out with others atm and I don't want to spoil their day and I don't have a boat at moment. Its no problem for me , If Im sick,Im sick. I just need somewhere to sit it out and will sometimes come good. Hazard of the occupation for me, but don't give up unless you still get sick on the good days as well. Not much you can do then

Day before

Sat, 2014-03-15 17:39

Don't get on the piss the day before and stay off it while out there.

Keep away from dairy products, specially milk, fizzy drinks, anything greasy,  etc.

Eat dry biscuits, ginger nuts are best, ginger, plenty of water even if you are spewing it up because you will dehydrate in no time otherwise.

Stay on deck, don't go in to the cabin , stare at the horizon if feeling queazy and most importantly----don't herk up inside the boat because you will make others follow suit and they won't be your friends and call you BAD names!!!

I don't need pills but take others advice and stick to it on their use

Lisa ,s boyfriend "' ralph?''

Sat, 2014-03-15 17:42

Its a simpsons joke, anyway moving on , I did use a hayfever medication called avil, not advil,

comes in a yellow box , no script needed, and boy were they strong , used on kids etc , they will near enough knock them out,

I used to wonder how something so strong is avail over the counter, but they did settle my stomache , and I am a bad sailor.

One thing I have noticed and it happened to me too, is I see most teenagers really seem to suffer from it, as I grew older

it seems to get better. As most know its a hell combination of unbalanced fluid in the ears and a mind problem as well.

If it was just a simple pysical bodily sickness , it would be instantly cured by the pills , but theres a mixture of excitement , nerves

and other things that screw with you. In other words all the ginger , pills and wristbands arnt going to help if you believe you will get sick

or are nervous or apprehensive , even if you dont feel like you are.

Ok , a cure , I start with no greasy , heavy foods or beer the night before , and take 1/2 a tablet of your choice before going to bed.

Next morning , a light breakfast , lightly spread toast is great, and a cup of tea ( anti ox and calming propertys) and then 2 tabs

as mentioned at least 30 mins before heading out. Also increasing time on the water helps as you slowly build confidance.

Take dry bikkies or ginger nuts and sip water freq whilst out.

A foot note , I read once the longest most people on cruise ships stay seasick is about 3-5 days , beyond that ( cause your on it 24/7)

( if your not dead haha) the body adjusts and the motion becomes the norm so your body no longer induces the feeling.

ok , 4 day anchor and burly session on the ffb anyone?

Took a mate out on my first

Sat, 2014-03-15 18:33

Took a mate out on my first trip in my new boat and got seriously crook while he was completely fine. Never been so sick before and took two days to get completely over it. So i started trying taking two Quells the moment i left home for the ramp and it fixed me instantly. For the first few times i had to knock another one or two back a few hours in when you start to get queezy but it sorted it pretty quick. Just make sure you can recognise the signs as once your too far nothing will save you haha. I know these arent for everyone and can give you side effects but they do work for me and now i'm down to just one half of a tablet and can be out for 9-10hrs in terrible conditions. Anyone new even if they have been on a boat before cant step aboard without taking them as i've heard it way too many times and got tired of calling the end of the day early as they begged for mercy.

sea sickness

lack of sleep will disturb you and make you more prone to sea sickness.

Dont drink coffee....disturbs your nervous system and more likely to pewk.

avoid milk for breakfast

eat toast with peanut butter.....squirt ginger through a garlic press onto that....then add honey.....unusual taste but you wont feel sea sick if you do that.

The first two are the worst offenders.

Seasick

Sun, 2014-03-16 05:33

I did 24 years with the Navy, and was lucky enough NEVER to experience seasickness. Some guys I know get chronic seasickness, the second we start moving, even in Sydney harbour.

However, a few years after getting out, I did experience seasickness. I believe because I wasn't at sea at regular intervals.

To avoid seasickness

Go out often, short trips, pick good days, you body should get used to and this immunes you. Avoid heavy greasy brekky's (and avoid thinking of heavy greasy brekky's)

Travelcalm is issued to sailors, so must be good.

If you feels seasick, keep your eyes on the horizon, keep doing something (I used to force my boys back to work and give them jobs to keep their mind of seasickness, it works), fresh air. Avoid engine smells, bait smells and avoid looking down (putting fins on or baiting up). Stay midsection on the centreline as this is where minimum boat movement occurs.

Did a 13 day cruise out of Syndey with the family at Christmas on a 90,000 tonne vessel (somewhat bigger than the usual warships I served upon) and it was quite rough. Son got seaksick and all the crew recommended eating green apples and ginger. I have never heard of the green apple thing.

Lastly, we never used to have females on board ships until the decision waschanged. Before going to bed, I would always do a walk around the ship and check of all my weapons, magazines and compartments that I was responsible for are secure. We got issued our 30 or so females and sailed out of Sydney into a large storm. As I headed up to the very bow, near where chemicals are stored etc, all I could smell was the strong stench of a heaps of young ladies throwing up about 20 of them, sprawled on the deck, sharing rubbish bins, bags and containers.

I said 'What are you doing here?'

Their reply was ' we are all feeling seasick' (obviously)

'So what are you all doing up, this is the worst place to be?

The males sailors had told them this was the BEST place to be!!!!!

1300 SEA SICK

Sun, 2014-03-16 06:41

Call the above number mate. They are a chemist over east that developed a sea sickness tablet for ET's fishing crew. My Mrs uses them and doens't have an issue with drousiness or dry mouth. She has one per day and she comes out in any kind of weather fishing now. Had her out in 42 Knot gusts for the billfish shootout last year and was no worries at all.

I think there real name in BOVA chemist but if you call 1300 SEA SICK you speak diectly to the chemist and they sort out a pack of 20 pills for you. You can get as many as you want I think then they deliver in a couple of days pretty cheap too I think.

http://www.escapewithet.com/sea_sickness.aspx

Here is the ET page describing them.

I still believe the only real cure for sea sickness is lying flat on your back under a Gum tree.

Hope this helps.

Sun, 2014-03-16 11:53

honestly I believe all of the above to work in the short term to some degree but in the long term it's just time on the water.

most ppl I know who spend a lot of time on the water started off getting sick.... I think the best advice which someone mentioned further up the thread was to do some short runs on calm days and gradually get used to it.

the only above that I would disagree with ....(sorry laidback dood, lol) is the coffee. I believe that maybe the milk in coffee is not good ....maybe that's the problem(dairy does seem to contribute) but the caffeine will help overcome being sick. (thats why many seasick pills have caffeine in them) try red bull instead. (yes seriously).

But as I said: more time on the water you just get used to it.

caffeine(D d 001)

Tue, 2014-03-18 10:32

That information was from a qualified nurse mate......I am sure the caffeine in sea sick pills would be very low......just to counter act the drowsiness that commonly comes with sea sick meds but a cup of avreage coFFee contains 80mg of caffeine....a cup of tea 20mg.......It stimulates the nervous system and when you are feeling sick.....that is the last thing you want..............The mention of dairy is helpful to me.......the last time i threw i had cereal with milk and when i went out....it wasnt that rough either.....I felt much better once id got rid of that........so i will bear that in mind for the future....just have toast/peanut butter/ginger/honey.

Tue, 2014-03-18 13:06

yeah you are prob right about not being too much caffeine in pills.
was really going by my own experiences with caffeine. But it takes a fair bit of caffeine to jump start my system in the morning these days ....lol (think I'm starting to become immune....lol

few ppl have mentioned that it's in the head (seasickness) and although there is def a physical (inner ear balance part the) ..."in the head" thing is a little bit true as well.

have found that if you have a little "high" from having caffeine in your system you are generally more awake more active and travel better.

interesting how everyone's very different when it come to motion sickness.

OR.....maybe I just drink too much Red Bull!

All in the head...partly so at least

Sun, 2014-03-16 18:46

I worked with a lass that would get seasick on hearing people talking about being seasick on a boat!? A week before sailing, mention the boat, she'd go green, was great fun. That was enough to convince me that some people make themselves sick worrying about it.

I also have a packet of those horrible 'equal' sugar replacement tablets hidden in a kwells packet. If people mention that they are worried about getting crook, they get a 'kwell'. They work most times to...

But, I have seen tough old salty sea mongrels get seasick in 10 metre swells caused by a cyclone. Of 27 people, 3 didn't get crook; The skipper - in a gyroscopic chair, the Cook - cause she only ever consumed Winnie reds and xxxx; and me - several big Doobies per day (ah, the old days) and I spent most of the days on the back deck in the open air.

I take one Kwell and that

Sun, 2014-03-16 19:13

I take one Kwell and that works for me everytime, dries the mouth out a little but makes me feel damn good lol. Everyone's different so it might take a bit to find what's causing it and what helps you. Fuel fumes are probably the worst culprit. Don't try and make rigs in a choppy sea that's a sure fire way to hurl. Keep focussed on the horizon and drink plenty of water, cause if you have to spew it's probably the least offensive gut content.

heh Nothing like some good advice for the ladies!! I find an offering of a cold glass of tuna milkshake. that gets them going. Snot sandwidge with bum dags is another. Seen a bloke down a cup of orange roughy blood, that had us all reaching! If all else fails get a mouthful of dice fruit and fake spew it into a brown bag, then spoon eat it if front of likely subjects. works well....

Spewing

Mon, 2014-03-17 20:57

One of my mates worked a crayboat years back that used to take punters out as well and would take them for a quick fish after they finished pulling their pots.

He would inspect their lunches and the one with the best one would cop it so once they got sick he'd get the dinner. Full beard and mo, he'd do a farmers hanky trick, block one nostril then blow you nose with out a hanky. Snot all down the beard, in his mouth the whole lot then front the person up and chew on rotten bait get to them to chuck up.

Worst trip I have done was across the Tasman in a 24 metre steel ex trawler, with 14-18 metre swells and 50 knot plus winds, got squirmish and wouldn't have minded some sleep but spewing was out of the question.

Picked a new decky up in Exmouth, asked him if he got sea sick and told him that if he did there was no way I was going to bring him back because next stop was Hedland some 12-14 days later, took him 5 days to come good

Pop down to 777 pharmacy on canning hey applecross and get your self their compounded travel sickness capsules, best thing I ever did, I used to get sea sick on the most calmest of days. After using them I can go out in any condition with out getting sick, also get to enjoy couple of beers.

Usually just take it 30mins/1 hour before going on the boat.

this a common occurance

Tue, 2014-03-18 11:58

this a common occurance amongst fisho's , which tablet works best.

best way is to try them all , Sandy has done that with a lot of the other remedies as well but the only one that works which has been mentioned several times is travacalm.

light breaky and 2 travacalm minimum half hour before hitting the water . make sure you carry plenty of water to drink but dont over do it . make sure you have food on regular intervals as well but keep it simple, sangas , biscuits or crisps . She has felt queezy at times but never chucked using this method unless someone else triggered her off

I have been sick before myself but not often. depending on how i felt weather i take a tablet or not, mostly go without

Mon, 2014-03-24 08:35

Sea sickness is a type of vertigo and is caused as a result of a little thing in your ear called the "vestibular apparatus" not coping with the change in balancing. You can " disable " it in a sense by drinking some alcohol, usually a can of beer does the trick. Alcohol Messes with your balance as well so I think that it must take the edge off thing, of course if you drink too much you will loose your balance... No joke it does work.

Yep!   I'm sure it works.  I used be spewer, but was advised to have a couple beers.

I have only spewed twice in the last 6 years, and that was when I failed to get my beer into me.

Matsos alcoholic ginger beer

Thu, 2014-03-27 16:56

Matsos alcoholic ginger beer for me. Ticks the alcohol box and the ginger box.

I'm not usually that bad though, I only feel it if there's a big swell or if I'm looking down tying knots for a while.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

I suffered real bad, no

Wed, 2014-04-02 14:30

I suffered real bad, no matter what I took. It really got in my head, as per other answers up the thread.

i got hypnotised twice, to sort out my head, and it worked great. I still take a pill (ET's one or Travacalm), but have not been seasick for 7 years (felt sick, but always overcame it).

I was a skeptic, but was desperate for something to help, as I love boats and fishing. I reckon the hypnotism worked because i really wanted it too.

give it a crack

of mine's missus worked for fisheries and she told me that some  guys would tape their 2 toes next too the big toe together and that stopped them getting sick.

Not sure if that works. if i feel a bit sick i eat some sweet stuff, that help me. not a big believer in tablets.
