jayco camper trailer

does anyone here have a jayco camper trailer or something similar, my wife has finally agreed that we need to start getting away and camping. she won an overnight stay in a teardrop camper and loved it, has anyone seen how small these things are?

i am on the lookout for a used camper trailer that has everything she would need that is not  the size of a dog box, and they are  bloody expensive.

Jayco Outback Swan

Tue, 2017-05-09 12:27

Friends of ours had a Jayco Outback swan same as pictured. A great unit with plenty of storage and easy to tow. Takes a little time to set up. Has offroad suspension if needed

The only issue they had was that everytime they wanted to go away they had to open it up to pack clothing/food etc. Sold earlier this year and purchased a caravan.

Required electric brake system fitted to vehicle and would recommend Redarc auto system which auto calibrates so no manual adjustment required. Cost me about $550 with anderson plug to charge battery when hooked up to vehicle. FYI I have MDC Jackson rear folding camper trailer.

How would you rate the rear folding camper trailer, is it a good setup ( does it have a pull out kitchen etc)

Love it

Below is a link to the one we have.

We find it is perfect size for just the two of us as kids all grown up. Takes about 15 minutes to set up main tent section and about 30 minutes for the annexe. Best of all it is always ready to go for quick get away over the weekend as everything is stored in it. Just have to pack clothing and food in car, hook up and we are away.  Have done about a dozen trips in 18 months mostly quick weekend getaway and planning to do Gibb River next year

Yep pull out kitchen which is handy if stopping for lunch on the side of the road. 4 burner and sink - no hot water.

Has plenty of storage up front and under the bed. The main reason we got this one was the annexe runs the full length of the trailer when open so it coveres the storage up front that has a fridge slide and pantry. Also plenty of room on top when closed for travel boxes etc and a kayak I take on holidays as well.

Also the price was right for us. Although made overseas when it is imported they ensure all to Australian standards. Some Australian built campers trailers such as Cub can be twice the price and you are basically getting the same quality and features.

The only downside was the ball weight of 180kg unloaded so by the time I added 2 x 4.5kg gas bottles and water was near vehicle tow ball weight allowance. But what I do if fill 80ltr water tank which is behind the wheels. I did have to put in air bags in the rear springs ($500). I have a 2010 Prado petrol and easy to tow

MDC have a few different options when it comes to rear or forward folding camper trailers which can fit into your budget. Also the extras you get for the price is great such as solar panels when camping where there is no power

Overall great value for the money but need to make sure you allow for electric brakes, Anderson plus and air bags if needed

We have a 2011 Jayco Swan

Tue, 2017-05-09 19:43

We have a 2011 Jayco Swan outback. Paid $23k for it in Jan. Upgraded from a $5k PMX soft floor camper trailer.

Pros:

-very easy to setup. 15 minutes for basic setup as opposed to an hour. Longer if you are free camping I guess. Camper trailer took 4 hours once, Jayco 1.5 hours

-heaps of room and storage

-everything has been thought of and you don't need to empty tubs to find the knives and forks

-tows like a dream

-well insulated and nice and warm off the ground for the little people

-good re-sale value

Cons:

-heavy at 1.4t empty

-quite intricate systems so DIY is a bit hard

-more to break so when it does happen, game over

Personally, I wish w had thrown our cash at ours years ago. After 53 nights in our camper, we never used it for a weekender as it was hard physical work to set up and pull down. We are planning our second weekender in a fortnight with the Swanno.

Do it!

Jayco Swan

Ticks all the boxes except it's a pain in the bum pre and post going away with it having to be fully opened if you want to load and unload. Now considering a pop top but not sure if I can justify the usage. Having said that, if it was less hassle, ducking off for a weekend might be easier to do!!

Forward Fold

Fri, 2017-05-19 09:39

I have a PMX forward fold has everything you need water, lights, sink, stove etc etc but like the jayco a bit of setup 2hrs to sleep and cook only and a bit longer to get everything right so not good for a quick weekend packup always seems to take twice as long but awsome for a week away, I looked at the jaycos they probably had a more "comfortable" setup inside but no outside kitchen like the camper which really made my choice easy no way did i want to cook and eat inside or have to go into it everytime to get at the fridge. I would say be careful if you look second hand at campers made in china probably more bad than good ones and even though i have a good warranty on mine it is not transferable if i were to sell got to take that into account.
