Jurien bay Long weekend

Stayed up in Green head over the long weekend, but due to the swell the ramp didnt look too friendly and a lot of sand and weed so fairly shallow.

Ended up heading back to Jurien and heading out from there.

As most probably know, the weather wasnt the best, but we did get out Saturday and Sunday. Saturday had little wind in the morning but a fair amoount of swell. Sunday had a little more wind and big swell, biggest i have been out in! Sounder was showing over 5m variances frrom top to bottom of the waves. Ended up with an engine issue on Sunday so the day got cut a little short as i could only put around as one engine wouldnt go above 3k revs without the engine oil light coming on...likely a sensor.

Anyway Saturday was the best of the day, being my first trip out of JB, i didnt have any ground so just winged it in some locations. 2nd drift resulted in the best fish of the trip, a 11-12 kilo Dhu for Laurie...not bad for your first ever dhu fish.

Managed a few more fish, a reasonable pinky, couple BB's and another dhu, but did end up landing 9 dhus for the day. Pinky was a good story, one mate carl snagged the bottom and snapped the line close to the tip of his rod. Next drift he hooks up and starts the wind up with a fish on. As he gets closer to the top we couldnt see any fish, and he was actually tangled with his old rig. Being a little pissed off he starts to untangle and the says 'i think theres a fish on my old rig!' and he brings his old rig with like a hand line and sure enough there is a pinky on it! All ass that was!

Sunday was a different story, with engine issues our day was cut short, but did end up with another BB and a good baldie. It was pretty swelly out wide.

Ended up Sunday arvo having a round of 9 holes at Green head golf course...that was an experience, sand greens and weed fairways!

All in all, not too bad for the weather we had, will definitely be up there again for another crack!

Big Swell

Mon, 2013-09-30 23:03

I was there as well, from Friday onwards.  Friday's swell was huge....even going out through the north leads was ..... well, interesting!!  I vowed I wouldn't do that again if the swell was the same, but fortunately Saturday and Sunday the swell dropped off a bit.

The interesting thing was that we fished the most of that time in less than 10 knots (Friday and Saturday didn't even need a sea anchor, whereas the guys who fished out of Perth said the wind was awful...just one of those weekends where 200kms makes a huge difference to the wind.  Saturday was probably 5 knots of north east most of the day.

Fishing was excellent...normal demersals, plagues of Red Throat, lots of Sambos.  Scored a bunch of Yellowtail Kingfish at the back of the breakers, plus picked up a Queensland Spotted Mackerel as well....kind of out of season I would have thought.

Agreed, slow drift both days

We found a couple sambo's as well, plague numbers of red throats and no shortage of the bloody NW Blowies either!

Nice bag mate would be happy

Tue, 2013-10-01 08:43

Nice bag mate would be happy with that, we stayed up there for the wk end was meant to head out but the alcohol and footy took priority for the wk end, couple of fellahs down the road went out for a fishing comp, didnt have a real good wk end, few snapper small dhuies nothing really much to report back.

how far did you get out Belly fish - to the 2nd bank or inside?

All over

Tue, 2013-10-01 10:18

We were in a fishing comp as well.  We fished all over, I guess it's called the second bank.  We were in a depth of around 48m approximately 21nm NW of Jurien.  We then headed over the drop off and fished in 70-100m.  That's where most of the Red Throat were.  But we also fished inside the bay....the object of our comp is to catch different species.  That's where we got the Yellowtail Kingfish and Mackerel.

ahhh you must know my mates father in law, got a house on Ward street - we wondered down the end of the street sat and sunday to johnnys house to see what the boys caught.

Cant wait to get out there and do some jigging for the YTK and Dhuies myself - just over the bank is where we want to target next.

one of the old fellahs got a 7.6kg bolt cutter which was a new start record haha.

Glad you got

Tue, 2013-10-01 14:21

some fish Bodie.  The ramp at GH is a disgrace and the council should bow their heads in shame.  Especially a long week end.

We were in Jurien on Friday and went down to the ramps, quite a few boats out, glad you all got a good feed of fish.  I love Jurien and if had my way would have bought a house in Jurien instead of Leeman.

The Council in their newsletter say that the new Boat Ramp will be finished by Xmas 2013, hahahahahahahahah (laughing out load)  Its now the 5th October and no where is their any work being down on the ramp at Sea Rescue.  They can't even make their mind if it will be a fixed jetty or a floating jetty.   Had the money for about 2yrs+ Grants etc but nbobody is pulling their ruddy finger out HELLO you w.......kers pull your finger out and do something ggggrrrrrrrr.

Jurien is a lovely town and being a woman I like it as more to do hahah  But love my house in Leeman.

Hey guys we hit Jurien both

Sat, 2013-10-05 09:56

Hey guys we hit Jurien both days as well over the long weekend and did quite well with the biggest dhu going around 12kg. Some nice big baldies as well. Similar thing happened to me Bodie on Sunday which cut our day short. Had an alarm come on whilst out wide while fishing the 70's, after some investigation at home found it to be a corroded fuse holder on circuit that sends power to the smart craft gauges that control the ignition. Damn $2 parts sometimes its the simple things you over look.
I must agree with you on the swell it was huge on Saturday.
