just bought a Simrad NSS12 Evo2

After months of back and forth I have finally settled on an NSS12 Evo 2. The big install will be this weekend and I can't wait to get out on the water to try it out. It is going onto my side consol Trailcraft Profish 510 so its a big screen on a small boat... I am going from a Navman TrackFish 6500 to this so basically crawling out of a cave into the real world.

Any advice on setup / install, do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

JJ

installed my own NSS8 not long ago. (I also went from a navman trackfish)
really nothing to the install.

are you going the 1KW tranny ?

I just took the time to make up the fast screens I wanted

IE 60% LHS chart. top RHS Nav. bottom RHS sounder.

Just an eg. but you will quickly (if you havn't already) work out what you like to see while
traveling to a spot
sounding
drifting
etc etc and the screen for each.

setup and menus are so easy and logically set out. you"ll be a pro in no time.

 Thanks for the info D_d_001

Thanks for the info D_d_001  , I am only going with the P66 50/200 tranny at this time as I have no plans to go out deep in the small boat. The furtherest I will probably venture is out behind the 5 Fathom Banks from Safety Bay. Once I upgrade the boat to maybe a 6.5m then I'll go the 1kw tranny. My plan is to get to know what I'm looking at on the screen compared to whats on the bottom (confirm by diving etc) and then work my knowledge up from that. I'll just be happy to finally see a decent track to follow when drifting over a lump or something..

Hi Mowong, thanks for the heads up on the software uprade and the screen protector is a great idea, i'll definately look into that. I don't think the back of my boat is big enough to fit all the tranny's you have on yours lol but I will be adding more when the boat upgrade happens.

Thanks for the info mate..

 When I installed my nss7

Wed, 2015-06-03 14:19

When I installed my nss7 last year it wasn't displaying water temp.  After speaking with the navico guys I did a software upgrade and problem solvered.  Also make sure you go through the settings and select the correct transducer that you're using.

If you plan on taking screen shots like these.....

make sure your info bar at the top isn't displaying lat / long or your cursor is displayed (which also displays kat / long bottom left...)

otherwise there may be a few more boats in the area next time ;)

software upgrade

Wed, 2015-06-03 15:54

Thanks for that Randall, you make a great point about the screen shots.. I'll be sure to do as you recommend. Is the software upgrade a easy process? I haven't picked it up yet so I want to get my ducks in a row before I collect it and maybe ask them to ensure its all updated with the latest info..

hmmm.  need to remember.  I think when you select split screen - zoom you can then increase the magnitude of the zoom.  I just can't remember how now.  might be a button selection I think....  I know I discovered it by accident.

Most reputable sellers of such gear are all set up and should do it in a couple of minutes. Really the sounder should have the latest software update before it leaves the shop. If it doesn't Joe, I have the card reader ect to do it , and the update is readily available free online. Very similar to the lowrance units.

Yep it is an easy process but I'd ask the shop first.  It really is as easy as downloading it to a micro SD card, putting that in the unit and following the instructions.

it's installed

Thu, 2015-06-11 09:34

I can't believe how easy it was to install. I did have a mate come around to check on the wiring setup but it is all good to go. I have had the boat in twice but am having trouble with the sounder image dropping out when I apply speed to the boat. I guess it will just be a matter of adjusting the transducer up and down to find the right position.

So far I'm very happy with it..

almost got it sorted

Tue, 2015-06-16 10:44

Randall, i launched from Bent St, Safety Bay on Sunday (horrible weed build up) and after raising the transducer up a bit I got a much better reading and I maintained the bottom image travelling at 15 klm. I will raise it a tad more but have to re-drill the holes to do this. I obvously had it too far below the hull and turbulance or something was affecting it. I'm much happier now that I know what needs to be done..
