Just plain lucky

Got back almost to ocean reef road after a trip to Lano , when another boat pulled alongside. Let us know the wheel bearing was "gone!"
Too true. Think the caliper was the only thing stopping the wheel and hub flying off.

That's as close to disaster as you ever want to be I reckon.

i new they needed doing but was putting it off untill the trip to exmouth, was going to redo all of them.
i made it home with no damage to the axel, but had to replace the cups and bearings.
did you get home or do it on the side of the road?

Made it home , but had to be close.
I go over my trailer brakes and bearings every easter.
Thought that'd be enough preventative maintenance.
Not so.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Me too
Me too but I lost the hub and wheel, and only noticed it on a piss stop. pulled over, walked around the other side and was happily letting off some pressure and looked at the tub and thought what the Fu*k. lucky I had a spare hub & bearings. On the bright side the boat towed really well on 3 wheels though!
This habit is getting expensive!

the problem is
with boat trailers you hurtle down the road and everything heats up then it gets dunked in cold water and everything contracts and water gets sucked into the bearings.even the best seals let a little water in.i always keep a spare set of bearings and a little pot of grease in the boat just in case.

Lucky boy
Very lucky indeed Grayzee.
Trust me, its not alot of fun when one of your trailer wheels goes missing. Lucky you have a tandem.
Good on the other fella for giving you the heads up. See, not all people are mongrels...just most of them:)
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

Bloody Lucky I would say
Bloody Lucky I would say Grayzeee.
I lost a wheel once on the way back from Lancelin, I reckon the fine grit in the water getting sucked into a heated bearing contributed to the problem. Having replaced a bearing on the side of the road once I have no wish to do so again. Especially after having to use a cold chisel to get the hub off the axle. I therefore no longer service my bearings, they are replaced without fail every year, whether they need it or not. I also no longer do beach launches !
Off thread but still on the same subject, has anyone any experience with the sealed bearings that are in an oil bath ? Its a bit hard to take the advertising blurb as gospel so any real life feedback appreciated.
cheers

Bearing Buddies
Some people don't rate them, but i have used them for 10+ years now and am a big rap for them. I travel 100k's each way to put the boat in so the bearings are well up to running temperature when dunked in water.
One extra thing i choose to do is every 2nd trip i go around each wheel ( dual ) and pressurize each bearing buddy with just a small pump of grease. This seems to minimize how much water can actually squezze into the bearing cavity. If over pressurized the seals will pop outwards and all is lost. Obviously a check of sidewards movement when greasing will help prolong your bearings as well.

Yeah , I do put new bearings
Yeah , I do put new bearings in every year without fail.
This went at 11 months. Not a good run.
Packed it properly too.
I would ask if anyone has any preferences on make of bearings that they have had a good run with.

Will check old ones'
Grayzee, The first set i used on the rusty trailer lasted 8 years with out a bearing failing or being changed. I fitted these myself on the original trailer. They were timkin bearings, i guess you have to wonder if the made up spares that can be bought are of the same quality.
This original trailer would have done at least 50 trips x 200k's, just make sure to nip up bearings after the first couple of trips and regularly check bearing temperature early on.
I now have a Redco trailer, very popular in the NT, i will certainly be watching them since this article. I guess that is the great thing about this forum hopefully we are all picking up a little something along the way.

I think you hit the nail on
I think you hit the nail on the head there twitchy
After fitting new/repacking old bearings , take the boat for a tow , then re check the tightness before putting bearing buddy's on.
I didn't do this.
Thought I'd set them well by tightening till hubs didn't quite spin freely , then backed off till I could fit the split pin in.
They must have loosened up a fair bit more.
