I dont think there are that
I dont think there are that many secrets to good sounder operation....main things in order of importance from my experience....
1. Transducer installation (depth, angle, turbulence in front of it etc). If this aint correct, forget getting good operation at anything over 7 knots.
2. Transducer type (thru hull vs shoot thru vs transom mount in that order, power). By far and away the best is a thru hull with performance fairing.....miles ahead of anything else as it removes turbulence......unfortunately not an option in 1 kw or above for a trailer boat as the B260 is enormous..........
3. Sounder type -no doubt my 1kw Furuno is heaps better than my 1kW Garmin using the SAME tranny, so internal processing is important.
4. Tweaking of manual settings. As you can see, the actual tweaking of the sounder settings, while important, are a fair way behind the transducer setup.
In anything less than 150m I find full auto is more than adequate and gives 95% of the performance of tweaked manual operation.
In plus 250m, it's a different ball game and it is critical to go manual and really tweak TVG, gain, clutter etc.

Bodie, the B164 is a 1kW
Bodie, the B164 is a 1kW flush mounted thru hull with 3 elements that is used for both 50 and 200 kHz. Nice tranny and about 6 times more sensitive than 600W units like the B60 or P66 transom mount, but still and entry level 1 kW.
The SS264 pair I have (same flush mounted housing as your B164, it just used two of them, one for 50 kHz with 7 elements and one for 200 kHz with one large HD element). This is up to 50 times more senstive than the B60.
The B260 uses the same elements as the SS264 pair but crams them into one large unit, and this is then housed in a massive performance fairing (looks like a small canoe attached to the bottom of your boat.....). This sets the transducer face several inches below the hull which eleminates a lot of the turbulence near the hull surface than the flush mounted units like the B60, B164 and SS264 get. These units are still hepas better than a transom mount, which gets all the hull turbulence plus more turbulence at the transom interface.....
Hence, yes, you have a 1 kW thu hull, but NOT the top of the wazza 1kW multe element with performance fairing thru hull. That being said, the B164 is more than good enough for anything under about 250m and a nice upgrade form 600 W.

If I talked about getting a tranny on my boat to most of my mates I'd get some really strange looks.

put me down as a starter
I think it is a great idea, strange non of the fishing shops have come up with the idea.
I think if some one with the knowledge of how to get the best out of your sounder and more importantly how to interoperate what the screen is showing you would be great. I keep all the photos put up on this sight and look at them and try to see what the people who posted them see. If you can get the Johnny on the spot with some of the photos and have him explain all the settings and show what they do and screen interpretation it would be great.
Please keep me in the loop.

I don't have a sounder let
I don't have a sounder let alone a boat but I would be keen to see how they work, and it would be good for people to put a face to a name if they haven't already.

Ryan was doing sounder tuition
For a while at about $400 a day on your boat but I don't think he does it anymore due to time restraints

You know it makes sense. We
You know it makes sense. We buy these state of the art pieces of equipment and are given little instruction books on the basics. Most airline pilots would have trouble interpreting the info displayed let alone novices like us. There's a good niche market out there for someone. Thank F$%k for the info that gets passed around on here.

Sounder school
I'm pretty sure a while back there was a sounder course offered and I think Oceanside / Ryan mentioned it , and I'll probably be wrong but Taylor marine might have been involved or a friend off Ryan's ( appologies for wrong names ) .
The problem with on land sounder info is you don't get to see the picture change as you change the settings like out on the water. What will really help you is to drive over a known piece of ground preferably with fish on it and change as many off the settings as possible ( just pluck random settings ) as many times as you can and compare the picture shown and youll what's missing or looks different in each pass ..
If your just after basic sounder functions then a get together would be very helpful , but nothing beats time on the water and that goes for fishing too , look at the top guys on here and around aus and look at how many hours they put in for the rewards ...
Cheers fishfish

I did a sounder course
I spoke to Ryan at Oceanside about doing a course and as he is busy with the fishing show he put me on to a guy south of the river.
Went to his house just two of us and did a four hour course he has four different sounders so it covers most brands ,the course was awesome it's amazing how much we don't know about our sounders has helped heaps with my fishing and would highly recommend it to anyone even if you think you know your sounder.
Cost $200 bucks per person his contact details are John 0405209101

Sounder Course
I run echo sounder courses at intro and advanced level. Tuition is hands on and is on board a boat at sea in Cockburn sound and surrounding area. Emphasis is on proper set and up interpretation of displayed data. Equipment available includes Furuno , Simrad,Lowrance,Garmin, Humminbird and Raymaine. The equipment available includes the latest Chirp technology specifically Furuno dff1 uhd, one of the first units in Australia, Simrad bsm2 and Garmin gsd 26 systems, all 3 units can run simultainously and clients can compare the features of each. Side scan sessions using structure scan in lowrance and simrad formats as well as the more expensive version can be utilised. Advanced seafloor mapping using Dr Depth and SonarTrx is available. I have lectured at Tafe in small boat handling and coastal navigation, am a current licenced pro fisherman with 30 years of sea experience. You can contact me at 93834270 after 5pm.
