You got a get away from any boat around you. Once one boat hooks up its all over. The bronzies in 15-32m ATM will take everything!
I was working with Aiden on Reefwalker today and we were slaying it. Even tho using heavy gear. No sharks because we were on our own. Get out into 45-48m of water. You'll do better out there and not get belted. You have to get over the 3and 4kg line its not going to work with the sharks around.your better using 8-10kg line. There's some brutes of mackies out there ATM as we found today with the surface strikes. Lock it up and get them in on bit heavier gear. Light line isn't always the answer. Sandpatch to baldface is firing. Out in the blue is off its head! No one around big macks and no fergles!
Don't bother following everyone else because everyone is getting railed on sharks. Look out of the box and the rewards are there. 6am the macks were chomping their heads off.
Bit heavier gear you can run 160dd's at least or if using 120s put a ball sinker b4 your trace to get it down a bit deeper. Once one rod goes off gave a small stickbait or raider ready and watch the surface strike caps.
Frothing for tmw again caos blood and more pointy heads!
Thanks for the heads up about the sharks, I'm up in April and am itching at the bit to get into some macks... I'm so tempted to drag the boat up this weekend for a days fish haha...
Do you have a tinny with a quad bike in it? I pedalled my kayak passed a guy on the river on the Thursday before the comp and I thought he could be you?
thanks Tangles. I am up there in a few weeks. Can't wait. any tips on cobia? I got my first last year out near the 3 mile on a drifted garfish that was taken while dehooking a small tuna. fantastic on the plate. how far out is the 45m depth?
I was out this morning, my second time out in the boat in Kalbarri, we trolled from the mouth to sand patch in 35 metres and nothing. We fished sand patch and nothing but wrasse and silver bream. We hooked a massive shark which took a while to bring to the surface, that was good fun but nothing else. There were schools of bait fish around, we could see schools of tuna and / or macks but we couldn't hook one of them. We trolled at 25 metres all the way back and nothing...
Is there something I'm missing or were they just not on the bite do you think?
your in for some fun times,as soon as there is constant activity in 50m,they will be there. there was a few in that depth in May ps on big jigs on the bottom

mate, if they were actively feeding, just grab a spin stick with a small twisty or chrome slice of some sort, get near the fish, cast, and wind like buggers, if they are actively feeding you can't really miss out if your lure is about the size of the food.
What colour was the water Steve, still a bit green? We got plenty of fish a little further north of the sandpatch last weekend. Water was a bit cleaner and plenty of bait on the sounder.
have a look at the photos. they are way past the sand patch and the water looks clean as. the lures in the photo has 2 chrome pinks. they are more black/silver/purple, but are dynamite. troll from dawn till noon only
TAngles is the man when it comes to experience around here, however, it's been a bit like that lately, there is so much tucker out there it's not funny!
we did all the usual stuff for the comp for very little return, and trolled the usual haunts for bigger all, however m ( this is my understanding anyway) the fish were eventually either way out around the 50 , or right in close.
all our Pelagics came from less than 20m of water. Including a nice YFT from 15!
I've been going there for 30 years and some days are quiet. generally, try to find clean water, if you get a strike, go over the same spot a few times. most boats are in the 18 - 28m depth, but I have heard the sharks are bad.north or south fire on their own days....they are where you find them, good luck.
Now I'm convinced they just don't want to come out to play this weekend, we trolled for 2 1/2 hours this morning north of the river. We started in 18 - 20 metres of water and got sharked once, on the way back we went deeper around the 37 metre mark and still no takers. We moved from 2 metre divers to 7 metre divers and changed colour lures but nothing seemed to work.
Does anybody have a favourite depth lure or trolling pace that seems to work for them?
I had a grand plan of heading a fair way north, quick bit of trolling, quick jig on a particular spot, then out deep to try to catch a red. Should have known better....Very light NW but it freshened enough to make me not interested in bashing out there.
Heap of activity along Baldface for the first troll, dropped a fish straight away, then released a stripie. Looking at the weather, I should have just adjusted the plan. But I left the fish , went further up, and trolled again someewhere I haven't tried for many years. Had a nice mackerel boatside, lost him. Went further up, one strike, tried for a demersal, nothing. So decided to troll home. Boated a mackerel, had yet another nice mackerel lost boatside, then a fair size YFT which i managed to release after boating. Then another smaller YFT of about 10kg which asolutely swallowed the lure, giving me on option but to kill him. No sharkings, no lost lures, just bad luck stories. All on deep divers, but the redheads wren't on today--various blues were the winners, go figure. Trolling about 5.5 kts, standard mackerel speed?
they are 2m depth. Also the RMG slightly smaller ones, they (RMG) have some 3.5m divers also and a great variety of colours. I'm not keen on the 8m deep divers as they pull the hell out of the line and reel but that is just a personal preference. my most successful colours are the 1)chrome pink,(by far) 2)king brown, 3)red head, 4)green/yellow mackerel pattern, (we call it the lucky green and have it in the prop wash no more than 10m behind the boat), 5)pinky colours and mulie colours. some of the RMG yellowy n green colours are dynamite also.
try trolling a garfish way back and leave it in the water if you get a strike on a lure, they often get a second fish.
looks like past the sandpatch is a place I would be trying sooner rather than later, 18-28m zigzagging as you travel. good luck

4-6 knots is the norm
don't stick to 1 depth. move in and out. mornings are always best! start as early as you can, drive away from the river 1-2km then setup in about 20+m
