Killer (Whale) Day off Cape Nat

Had a great day fishing on Thursday. Caught some good fish and came accross a pod of Killer whales. It was an awesome site seeing these guys, one I'll never forget.

The day started jigging up a few sambos. they weren't the biggest but were great fun.

After an hour or so of the sambos we decided to go and find some dhuies. Took a while to find them but when we did they were on in a big way.

First drop and I managed a good dhuie on a shout lightning jig and Dave got an unersized one that was tagged and released.

Next drop I hooked something on the way down. Dave also hooked up moments later. My fish wouldn't come off the bottom and I knew I was on to a monster. After a few minutes Dave had boated another good dhuie which was caught on a yambal jig.

I ended up getting bricked which was dissapointing because it felt like a cracker of a dhuie. After bagging out we decided to leave them and go back and jig some more sambos.

As we were heading off Dave noticed a few whales heading our way. As they got closer we realised they weren't just any old whale but they were killer whales. A pod of five came right up to us and checked us out.

After a few minutes they started making their way north and we got going and followed them. We did about 4kms roughly doing 10knots, during this time they happly kept very close to us. At times were just metres from the boat.

These guys were awesome and we were very lucky to see them. Probably could have followed them for a lot longer but it was getting late, so we left them on their way.

On the way home I stopped at one of my sambo spots. Hooked up straight away but to my surprise up came a dhuie. Sent him back and then headed in.

Hi Doakie/Dave

You both really suck. Nice fish landed boys. Looks like an awsome day. Good to see wind-on getting into some fish. Looks like you have taken possession of the Lamby 210. Atleast it fits on your boat. Great pics.

Might be down next weekend for a visit.

Dave

Stuff the fishing, the killer whales have always been on my to do list and missed them by a day most times in Exxy.  Remember that one for a while fellas, lucky bastards.  (alright the fish aren't bad either) :)

Thanks for sharing the experience. Some nice fish landed as well. After a day like that a deck chair and a few tinnies just make it an experience that makes you glad to be alive and in Australia I am sure.
