Kununurra Fishing?
Submitted by breamspanked on Tue, 2016-04-19 09:31
Hi guys, heading to Kununurra in a few weeks just for one night work trip so I'm just wondering where I can flick out a line close to town?
Haven't been to that part of the NW before and with a short window of opportunity just want to maximise an hour or two of fishing I'm hoping to squeeze in.
Any suggestions?

Bottom dam
Bottom dam aka Lake Kununurra has catfish and bream, stocked with barra too.
Try around the ski beach (sign posted) just out of town heading towards the diversion dam wall or the race course upstream of town.
Otherwise the rocks below the diversion dam hold barra when and where they feel like it.

Great - thanks!
Landing a Barra would be good.

Diversion dam rocks
Had a go fishing those rocks on a few occasions and got zip. Always used lures there but have talked to a few of the natives and lives do alright.
Sometimes when the water is quiet, you can hear the fish laughing at you !

An hour or two
I'd be heading to Ivanhoe Crossing.

Yeah, Ivanhoe or
For that limited amount of time, Ivanhoe is your best bet. Occasionally some monsters get hooked out from there. Other close options would be Valentines Falls or below the diversion dam wall.
Lures work a treat but soft plackies can do some damage too!
Just keep in mind those big salties that will eat you.

If fishing the diversion dam
Above - freshwater crocs
Below - saltwater crocs
If you've got a 4wd and are keen on an explore, the keep river is good for a barra. Just be very careful of the crocs there (especially if using a throw net).
