Lady Joyce trip yesterday

Took a mate for a run down to the Lady Joyce wreck yesterday, conditions couldn't have been better. Forecasted to be variable winds to 10 knots, well I got up to 5 at a guess.

Dropped anchor right over top of the main wreck and straight away Colin pulls up a fraction undersize mangrove jack and I am on to a good golden trevally of around 8-10kg, get it lose to the boat ready to lift it onboard when all of a sudden there is a bloody great splash, soaking both of us, and its gone straight down the mouth of a huge cod. Ping and its broken off.

Same thing happens 5 minutes later and this time the trevally has a lure in its mouth as a donation to the cod god.

Time to move, so head to another spot about 500 metres away, up comes a couple of good pinks, a excellent Spanish flag and 2 jacks for the ice box with another four of golden trevs and 3 mulloway estimated to be 12-15kg released. Lost a bit of gear to unstoppable sharks but at least they didn't rip off our fish.

Got a radio call from a mate asking if we could get him a couple of trevs or mulloway as he was short of fish so went back and drifted over the wreck hoping to hook up from the big school of trevs hanging there, not a touch, always happens when you actually want to get something for a reason.

Tried to load pics without success, shame because the underwater ones of the cod gives some indication of its size, we guesstimated it to be over 3 metres long

Big cod

Just looking at the cod pics, thanks for putting them up Chris, the girth on that thing is as big as 44 gallon drum.
It makes you think which would be more dangerous the sharks or the cod.

Isn't that the Lady Joyous, not Joyce?

Not being picky, but i knew the boat when it was still working.

Joyce

could be, its known locally as the Joyce, probably easier spelling. There is another wreck alongside it, by all accounts she sank about 15nm away and the refloated it and towed it there and sank it again. There are a few tyre bundles spread around the area as well.

Never mind the sharks it's the cod

You don't have to worried about being taken by a shark if you fall overboard. It's the bloody great cod you have to look out for.

Yr probably right

Likely to be the local spelling. The Lady Joyous was a K class trawler that started out on the prawns for Kailis, was converted to a freezer boat and chased crays up our way for many years, before the freezer boats were finally banned, then went scalloping in the bay, where she sunk. Capsized when a haul went bad on a windy night, IIRC. The bay could use more wrecks, i reckon, that one sounds like it's gold, from all accounts.

One more

There is a stripped out hulk of the fishing vessel Fitzroy waiting to be sunk as an artificial reef but the ones who think they know what is best for all of us won't permit it to happen.

They want a $10 grand guarantee that it wont move in the event of a cyclone and as insurance if a diver gets injured while diving on it. The hulk was a trawler for North West seafoods and caught fire, as a result it was completely stripped ready to be sunk and now the authorities want it to be scuttled in over 200metres of water for safety reasons, what utter bullshit! when they are laying concrete ones down south without any such guarantees for them
