Larger Snapper ???

Hi all

been a while lifes been hectic!!

Just after some advice..going out off Mandurah lately and berley up like mad and fresh bait light gear (depending on current).,, but always getting small snapper and while fun to catch and put back it would be nice to take a decent one home!!!!

My question is if getting the smaller guys are the bigger ones around or we just not deep enough (usually in 13 to 2o mts water)..?????

cheers\

 Fish low light times, dawn

Mon, 2015-08-17 18:24

Fish low light times, dawn and dusk and keep a constant burley trail of oily fish like mulies and the bigger models should turn up. Also might be worth fishing slightly larger baits to try get away from the small ones

have generally found that the smaller ones come into feed first from a school.

It's not often that you come across a huge school in metro but in Shark bay I've come across huge schools ...first the smaller ones take baits then they come in bigger and bigger.

As said above low light

Mon, 2015-08-17 19:12

As said above low light levels are the key in that depth, i fish five fathom out from dawesvile my normal game plan is to be on the spot an hour b4 first light to get my burly trail running if you can find fish on the sounder first great but not always important, i do put a drift bait rig with half a mulie out sometimes, but have had more sucses using soft plastics like gulp or zman in the glow in the dark coulours.

Persistence is the key

If you are getting the littlies, sooner or later youl get a bign. Its called fishing not catching but sounds like your on the money if you are getting little ones.

Upsize Your Baits

Mon, 2015-08-24 17:30

Big pinkies have big gobs.  We always have a whole "floating" fish out on a snelled rig - whiting, pilchard, squid, gar etc and have caught sized pinkies on all of them.  Big slab baits of tuna also go well.  Hutch has a good point.

That said,we have caught them on bottom rigs with relatively small baits too.  Catching pinkies is a patience game around dawn and dusk with good burley in the water to attract them (as above).  I'm sure if you keep trying it will pay off, but you have to be prepared to put in the hours.

Good luck.

If you head out of mandurah

Thu, 2015-09-10 16:59

If you head out of mandurah on the five I can almost guarantee large skipjack trevally at the moment, which if your fishing for fun are wicked on light gear. For snapper, leave a slightly heavier rod out the back, if you can on the edge of the burly trail given there is no current, with a whole prawn(or a fresh fillet of skippy) just floating through the watercolumn. This is the best way i have caught snapper off mandurah during the day.
