LB squidding 101
G'day all! Your local WA fishing newbie checking in for more advice!
Well the wife and I have developed a real taste for Calamari, so I thought I'd ask a few questions.
I'd like any and all tips you have on LB gear and tactics.
What am I looking for as far as squiddy habitat when LB? If anyone wants to share good spots NOR, pm me, but I don't expect that. Just really wanting to get into the action.
Any tips on skinning them? I've done it once, but didn't have much idea what I was doing.
Also, is there a minimum size limit on squid? Yesterday I walked the inner wall of Hillary's casting a small jig and caught 3 small squid in about 20minutes. I threw them back bc I wasn't sure if I could keep them. lucky little buggers!
anyway, all your tips and advice welcome! Who knows, if your advice pays off, I might just show up at your door with some complimentary squid rings!

No size limit, just a bag
No size limit, just a bag limit. Bit of salt on the fingers helps get the skin off but witha bit of practise its easy either way.

Squid
I admire your wife's good taste, for squid at least.Shore based is a bit hard but you are doing things right if you got 3 size is disappointing, but were the small ones are so are the bigger ones, try Woodmans point for a change but its a fair hike down past Fremantle, also Try Mindarrie up north of Hillaries,as for skinning,I stick my fingers down the tube, braking out the head and stomach, ink sack ect, then pull the swim fins off bu inserting fingers between wings and tube, most of skin comes off, then put your finger at the end of the tube and turn it inside out to remove the feather (backbone) not bone its clear, good luck Jersey

I let the little ones go as
I let the little ones go as well,, hopeing they will be bigger next time, lol, then some other bugger will catch them.
Don't forget when you catch a squid squeeze hard just behingd the beak,,thats where the brain is and it will go limp,,some people use iki sticks that they put in the mouth as well,,its a little L shape rod you put it in about 5 cm and turn it.
Cleaning squid is the worse part,,the boaties throw them in scaler bags and tow them home and all the skin comes off by the time they get back,,landbased you have to get it off yourself,,good luck ewith you squidding,,

squid habitat
is the same if you are land based or in a boat. I like patches of sand and weed, but generally speaking weed is what you'll get near groynes etc.
Landbased squidding at night - under the light, they love the light. I even put a torch on the water when I'm in my boat at night squidding.

For landbase there are
For landbase there are plenty of options. Not just visible weedpatches. Channels as well, deep drop off banks and obviously underlight at any structure. Why do you think the jetties do so well at night.
Rods wise I suggest going longer than 6'6 or 7ft as casting distance can be crucial as well. Why do you think most of the dedicated squid rods at no shorter than around 8ft. Im looking at a 9ft for extra distance when you want to punch out the heavier #3.5 and #4.0 jigs. Atm my 8'3" is just getting the distance I want but what abou that other side of the weedpatch thats 60-80m out?? Good example is Coogee Beach Cafe's little jetty, there's a huge bank of weed out there but about 70m out. You reckon you can make it with a 7ft rod. Im just getting out there with mine.
If you want to get into more squid, look at 8ft rods. They're pretty much an extended bream rod with power to punch jigs out wide.

Tried the shipping channel
Tried the shipping channel between North and South Mole last comp, produced most at the South Mole's. Also jetties in along the river with lights, like Honsu mentioned are worth trying.
