leader size for rubys?

Anyone experienced bite offs while deep dropping for rubys.recently Fished with 120lb leader and was catching decent rubys 10kg+. A couple of times we hooked what felt the same but bigger ones only to be bitten off after a few minutes. question is should I be using heavier leader or is there other sharp tooth critters down there responsible? definatly did not feel like the fish were sharked dropped fish were typical of popped leader or pulled hooks.

400 lb
I have always run a 400 lb rig with short leaders to the hooks of around 300mm and 80lb to the sinker , never had a bite off in 15 years
When you go to all the effort to go super deep no point going light on the leader and I dont think it makes any difference out there if they are on its on
The next time i see that jig will be in the mouth of something big !!

Been bitten off when fishing
Been bitten off when fishing deep and only using light 120lb leader. On examining line, it looked to have been abraded through so I'm betting we hooked big cod when we were after rubies. Now I use 300lb with a vinyl tube over the line.

Yeah nothing but 200Lb for
Yeah nothing but 200Lb for us up north for the paternosters.
Found out the hard way on my first trip to Gnaraloo losing heaps of fish (mainly reds) using 100lb.
The 200LB sorted that out as well as using a lot stronger hooks, arsed all the Gamkatu's off for either circles or Tarpons and now mixing it up again with Big guns.
As Deep said the fish up there don't give a fu^&k they are just vicious when the bite is on.
Two weeks today before we head off a little excited is an understatement
Love the West!
