Leaking Poly Fuel Tank

Has anyone had a poly fuel tank crack or puncture? I am getting some fuel in the hull mainly after I fill up and I've replaced the breather hoses and checked around the fittings after I fill up and there is no fuel around them so by the powers of deduction I am now assuming I have an issue with the tank itself and being 5mm poly I'm thinking there may be a small enough crack to let a bit of fuel out under the pressure of filling it up. It's not enough to stink the boat out but you can get a whiff of it and can definitely smell it when I wash out the bilge.

 My 200ltr poly tank smelt

Sun, 2016-09-25 22:23

My 200ltr poly tank smelt like it was leaking all the time but I couldn't see any fuel anywhere. I went to a boat builder to get it pressure tested and his reply was that poly tanks tend let the fumes leak through the walls of the tanks and not actually leak. He also told me that you can't pressure test the poly tanks.

poly leak

We had a leak on our poly tank.. through the float gauge gasket, would only leak when full.. not nicest feeling seeing fuel in hull whilst heading out..

Has happened twice now, may need to find a better gasket sealant?

Cheers mate, I've felt around

Cheers mate, I've felt around it when I fill up and cannot notice petrol around the fuel sender or any of the hose fittings. Gonna take it to my mech and have all the other hoses replaced and everything sealed up and see how I go.

I should add that when I was changing over the new hoses I did the stupidest thing possible and jacked the hull up to drain some water out forgetting I hadn't yet connected the new hose and poured about 16-20l of fuel directly into the bilge. I have since washed it out with CT18 and a tonne of water and it was ok after a few runs in Dunsborough with a residual smell but it definitely got stronger again after filling her up.
