Looking at a new surf rod

Went down to the local tackle store today in the search of a new surf rod to take on a trip up north. I took a liking to the Gary Howard Phatoms, probably best value for money around the $200 mark. Finding a reel to suit is another issue. Does anyone have any suggestions around the $300 mark.

What size is it?
Value for money wise it is yard to go past a Shimano Stradic FI or one of the Penn spinning reels.
