Majuro

I recently headed over to Majuro in the Marshall Islands for a weekend fishing tournament and to catch up with a good mate. It was a Fri/Sat tournament and was simply awesome. Started at 6am, about 0610 the stinger was out, 0612 the right back line was in the outrigger, at 0615 I had tied the rubber band onto the left back line and was reaching for the outrigger when a marlin ripped it out of my hands. You beauty. It's a great thing to see a marlin tail walking 15 minutes into a tournament. Unfortunately the hooks didn't stick and that was the story of the tournament for us. We had nine marlin strikes on the first day with no fish boated. We did let a couple of small (50-70lb) fish go at the boat though. We did get what ended up being the third place wahoo on day one. Day two we covered different ground and first pass of our selected ground saw a double hook up with a dogtooth and nice trout landed. Next pass saw my PB dogtooth onboard (35lbs). We got another couple more trout, before headed out to deeper water. We landed another solid wahoo and had another marlin strike but once again it evaded us. It was a great couple of days in paradise. The winning marlin weighed 623lbs and the winning yellowfin came in at 113lbs, massive fish. Next year I'll get that bloody marlin and it will be a year heavier.

One of those day I think. The hooks were brand new and I had run a file over them just to make sure. That's fishing I guess.

35lb is solid doggie in anyones language. It was my PB but they do get a lot bigger. Up around the 100kg mark in Fiji and Christmas Island I think. That would take some serious fishing to land one of those.

Lucky Btard. Looks great fishing. What are the Marshalls like as a sportfishing destination. I would imagine good, but sort of interested in Black(Papuan) and red bass, aswell as the usual reff resident trout and Trev's?

The best place I've been, that's the honest truth. It's all there and pretty much available all year round. Believe it or not marlin are the easiest fish to target for regular catches. We had nine strikes in a day. I told one of the locals about it over a beer and he told me a story of having all six lines hooked up at once to marlin with over hundred strikes and over 35 tagged/release fish in a day. Obviously that's the pinacle but it's a good story. Locals don't know how to exagerate up here so I have no doubt it's true. Jigging is fantastic, red bass, dogtooth, trout, emperors. Trolling for wahoo, yellowfin, barracuda is all year round. It's expensive with only one carrier providing the service but if your keen and have the coin it is more that worth it. A charter would set you back about $450-$500 a day for the entire boat. So with a few mates in tow that is dead cheap. Let me know if you need any more info. I only have 18 months to go and I'll be back in WA. If only I could pause time......

Very nice Soupy, missed this report.  Sounds like there's some solid marlin in that neck of the woods!!
