Mandurah crabs where are they
Submitted by friton on Thu, 2018-02-15 22:03
So, ive been to my usual crab spot down at Mandurah and over the past 2 years have come up with zero return for my efforts, Im a creature of habbit and keep going to the same spot because in the past have come up trumps at that spot. Scooping near Park Ridge boat ramp is my spot, 5-6 yrs ago would take 30-45 minute to get my lot, last year i think i didnt even see a crab, if i did it was undersize, been down a few times this year and same result, lucky to even see one. Whats happened? Any spots i should try? i dont rape and pillage, just take what i need for a feed and i need me a feed of crab, please help.......

Under pressure?
Cant help you with a spot as my usual landbased scoop spot, which is actually quite remote and not easy to find has been done over
like a dogs dinner this year.
Normal for the last few years was turn up at 5 or 6 am , place to yourself , round about 7 maybe see a couple of groups
in distance , that was about it.
Only been 3 times this year , and on arriving at 5 was greeted by around 5 or 6 groups already out and doing there thing.
I am not having a go at them , they can crab too , but the pickings become slim in a certain area when 7 groups crab over one small sandbar.
And that was during the week , so weekends must be a blowout.
Mandurah and perth are not small places anymore , and it wont get any smaller.

Park Ridge
Park Ridge has been ok for the few times we've been out (on the boat mind you). Typically we've been throwing 2-3 undersized/berried ones back for every 1 sized bluey so it's slow going. If you're not seeing them at all while scooping it sounds like they are there just in the deeper water.

Better going at nite or early morning by torch lite, more other species around and less people.

I haven't seen many in the shallows
Every now and then I go down to the estuary to catch a few prawns for bait and the crabs have conspicuous by there absence. Normally after dark you would see a few that would have tempted you if you had a scoop net but not lately.
Chasing them in a boat it is quite a different matter, setting nets in any bit of water more than 1-2 to 1-6 deep is proving to be very productive, saying that we call it quits once we have got our 3 - 4 for a meal.

We got our limit directly
We got our limit directly opposite the park ridge boat ramp last week on the boat...found the spot after a couple of hours of doing ok. Put the pots just on the drop off but still in less than A metre of water Doubled our 2 boat catch in about 30 minutes with some big ones among them. I think further north towards Davesville is doing better at the moment.
