Top one is a red bass, bottom

Top one is a red bass, middle one is an offshore mangrove jack.  You can see the differences in body shape and usually the eyes.  The third pic is a creek mangrove jack, much easier to distinguish.

Latjana species

Red Bass = Latjanus bohar, Mangrove jack = Latjanus argentimaculatus ( I love to call this one arguementiculatis because it allways fight with you)

Red emporor, spanish flag, fingermark, moses perch etc all belong to the same family. All great to eat (watch Ciguatera with Red bass in the Eastern States).

This link shows them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutjanidae

Cheers

 It shouldn't be too hard

It shouldn't be too hard distinguishing the difference between MJ vs redbass.

I reckon Cubera Snapper is harder to tell apart from MJ apart from its size.

Oh I remember there was case when a "Niugini Blackbass" caught off East M'sia mangrove system was sent to IGFA for record purposes only to be rejected because it was a MJ!! The MJ weight 6kg if I am not wrong. Saw the photo of the dead MJ....I would have called it Niugini Blackbass myself cos I can't tell them apart too!
