Pretty sure it has to be a marine radio so that cuts out the UHF.
If it was me, then I wouldn't be going for a 5watt hand held radio, the reason is the lack of distance in the event of an emergency.
Here in Carnarvon very very few people use 27meg because of the distances from fishing spots, during last years Carnarfin fishing competition there was only one vessel out of 119 entries using it and he was informed by us that if our 27meg set dies before this comp it won't be replaced, leaving him without coverage for this years comp. The same I think applies to Exmouth and Denham.
If you just want to talk boat to boat, you can use a UHF, though don't confuse it with the laws for having a working marine VHF radio onboard.
For a number of years we used hand held VHF radios, though forget the number of times we went out and the battery went flat so just hard wired one and solved the problem.

You can use a handheld vhf as your boat radio. Dont think they make handheld 27meg radios.

Don't think 27mhz will be phased out anytime soon, UHF won't be used, the channels are full of tossers and relies very much on line of sight.
