Mercury 150 Efi Alarms

Afternoon everyone/anyone!! I have a Mercury 150 Efi(2 stroke) and on the last trip off Onslow, I had 2 alarms going off. The first was 4 beeps every few minutes. The second was a constant beep and the only way to get it off was to turn the engine off and restart. The boat would cavitate at about 3100 rpm and then the alarm would start. I have been told it is an overheating alarm and the four beeps is a water sensor alarm.... Could anyone confirm this info before i rip the leg off and do the impella or give me me info on what i would have to do.

Cheers

Mariners 200 EFI

Thu, 2009-04-16 15:31

 I am running 200 EFI

I will be back home tomorrow pm time. I can look into my manual then however I can recall my overheating been one long alarm that did not go off untill i turned off the key. When the key was turned back on again and the donk was still hot the alarm still sounded without the motor running.

I may be wrong but is the four beeps in relation to the oil feed into the donk.

You can try this undo the cap on the tank on the donk turn it upside down and the alarm should sound as if the oil level is low with the key on. Be careful returning the cap they tend to break very easly due to heat and age. NOT TO TIGHT.

Hope this is some help.

alarms

Im pretty sure the 4 beeps is a water alarm. Unscrew the high pressure fuel filter (spin on filter)of the engine. Its mounted next to the vapour sep tank. and drain it into a clean container and check for water. As for the other alarm, it will beep if the oil level in the engine oil bottle is low, it is uncommon to have a sender on the main oil bottle unless you are running smartcraft. As for changing the water pump impeller, they really need to be changed every 100hr or 12 months, they are a small pump and have a big job to do for what they are. It would be handy if you could get a mechanic with a merc diognostic computer to confirm what the alarms were.
cheers andy

I have a 200 efi and from memory the water is one long beep and the oil is a series of beeps.

I had the oil reservior come off in some rough weather once and turn upside down.. I was wondering WTF the alarm was as all my gauges were fine but the oil level switch was active

Jack got a mate who has got that same motor. He had probs with alarms as well. Catching up with him tonight will ask him for details and let you know. I think he had it fixed with a minimum of fuss.

Problem Solved

Sat, 2009-05-02 12:36

Finally solved it!!! An oil sensor alarm. Inside the oil bottle on the port side of the engine is a float... on the BOTTOM of the float is a magnet. Obviously if the magnet isnt there the oil sensor thinks straight away that the oil is low as it isnt getting a signal.... Using after market oils can eat the glue away that holds the magnet in place... To make sure it is this ... Undo the two blue wires from your sensor and bridge it out by sticking a split pin in both wires that come from the engine.... If the alarm sounds... keep looking.... If it go's.... you are all over it!!! REPLACE THE OIL BOTTLE... NOT THE SENSOR. Obviously because the floats in your bottle yeh...... Thanks to all for your help.... Saved me a 600k trip...One way!!!

Just going to type that it could be the oil float

as Bob's got the 92 Mariner and he was out fishing got the beep beep, thought could be the oil bottle, looked plenty of oil.  His motor goes down to two cyclinders for trolling, so he came home nice and slow to be safe.   Took it to his mechanic and same thing as you, fixed it good as gold.

Thats good news

Jack. Hope it didnt cost you a fortune.

Iv learnt from this as well however it sound as if the same alarm is set off for Oil weather it is in the top tank and also the bottom one.

How old was your oil tank?? and can you recall what oil you have been running.

I have only ever run Caltex CTW 3 oil and have done so now for 7 years without a trace of trouble to the engines. The tank caps have gone britle as i mention in the above otherwise all is well.

Thanks for the info.

Yeh the oil i am running is

Mon, 2009-05-04 13:19

Yeh the oil i am running is Nautilus. excuse the spelling. Not to many options when you live in the sticks though... I've never had problems till now and the oil bottle is as old as the engine.... 2003 model. Reasonably new you'd think. The same alarm will sound if the water sensor go's off too aparently... Now i know how to do this it's two easy to fix problems if your out wide and you hear the alarm... Without the stress so much anyway.Bloody hany to know!! FOUR BEEPS..... CHECK THE OIL BOTTLE... IF ITS FULL... BRIDGE THE SENSOR.... IF THE ALARMS STILL THERE... EMPTY YA FUEL FILTER ON THE SIDE OF YA DONK AND GET THE WATER OUT OF IT!!! (IF AT SEA THAT IS) Amazingly easy if your aware of it. Bout to order my new bottle now... At this stage it's only cost me a few more grey hairs and less sleep... Which i can live with!! Tight lines.

those engines are renound

Mon, 2009-05-04 13:46

those engines are renound for sensor issues from almost everyone i know who has them, if its not an oil sensor its a fuel sensor.

When the fuel sensor goes off, the over heating alarm goes off aswell.
