Mindarie 3 mile Saturday Night

Went out last night to the back of the 3 mile out of Mindarie at 6pm with a mate to see if we could raise some fish. The aim was really some of the snapper I have been seeing there a lot in the 15 to 25m range.

We planned on anchoring and throwing out mulie pieces which seemed to be going OK. With the wind going one way and the sea the other there really was no drift around at all, which was lucky seeing as it took us 90 minutes to realise we had lost our anchor from the shackle coming undone. Luckily I have been looking for an excuse to get a nice new Sarca, but I will make a token effort to go dive it some time this week to see if I can recover it.

After 15 minutes I had a decent hit, with probably the most weight I have felt on a rod for a long while. I was initially in trouble because the lever on my new overhead was refusing to engage the handle properly, so for a minute or 2 I was hanging onto the braid with my fingers whilst wrestling trying to get the reel to play the game. After a few moments in freespool and then no drag whatsoever it all magically clicked into gear and I was away. The fight really was a non event, a few head shakes and one very small run and my first ever line caught Dhufish was boat side. Into the net and then the bin and I was a happy trooper. Was a very quiet night apart from that one fish, with it being the only real hit we had in the 3 hours of trying.

The fish went 60cm, and gave us 1.8kg of fillets. In the photo my wife took this morning it looks small, but as anyone who knows me will agree, I am a fair sized unit.

Happy days.

Matt

at least you got out there and gave it a go. hope you get that reel sorted for next time and dont have the prob again. just an idea for a pic with a fish like that looking small against you, try the go go gadget arm shot. it seems to work for a lot of others Laughing. 1.8 kg of fresh fillets isnt anything to sneeze at , its fresh and its going to taste great

No, you can always pick the go-go-gadget arms pics. Its best to give the fish to a kid for the pics.

Sun, 2010-06-20 15:46

Nah, no need to make it look bigger than it is. I know this is no special fish for most people on here, but I have been doing a lot of work learning how to get these on line, so I am pretty pleased.

Good stuff Matt

Sun, 2010-06-20 16:37

Well when you think 1.8kg of dhufish fillets in a fish store would prob cost you near on $100, is possibly a few days old and then theres the enjoyment factor of being out on the water = as long as its legal, its alll good.  Good catch mate.

hey matt least your duhy was

Sun, 2010-06-20 17:58

hey matt

least your duhy was size, the one i got myself on sat night was only 38cm, so yours is a monster compared to that.

whats your thoughts on being out there at nite? its a whole new world at night time.

i noticed the red  on the boat in the background is alot brighter than mine...mine is more burgandy with gold trim

i thought they only did the 2 colors, red/blue, obviously more than that.....

if you are reading Rod how many colors were there, or was it order what you want at the time of build.

for those wondering, we are talking southwinds here.

well done anyway and at  least your getting a feed.

cheers ron

Burgandy( not many in that colour)

Red

Navy blue

Teal blue (really more a greeny)

Ski Blue

Light grean ( cant think of the technical colour)

and white all over. The colours were a imcrease in price.

All good boats though.

I don't mind the nights as

Sun, 2010-06-20 18:24

I don't mind the nights as long as I can trust it to be quite flat. If I am rolling around i hate it, mind you I am very much a fair weather fisherman. We came in last night on 25 knots so it was obviously pretty calm. There was enough light on deck from the anchor light and our headlamps, but the thought of a wave breaking on you is there. We moved in tight to the reef late and we only lasted 15 minutes because I was starting to hear some waves breaking. You just don't know where they are. On a side note I have done some night diving so if you think it is different world on top, you should see all the colour down there.

Rod has one the same as mine (SF20) at the minute, it is a greeny/aqua colour, plus I have seen the SR655 (yours?) in the burgundy. Not sure on the SR20 options.

Hows the etec treating you?

matt mine is a sf655, there

Sun, 2010-06-20 18:42

matt

mine is a sf655, there seems to be some slight diff between these mdls.

i also noted in your pic that you rocket launcher is more forward than mine.. mine is bolted to the bit that slopes down at the end of the screen which would make your rear area feel larger but makes my cabin space look big

mateeeee i am loving the etec, but i must amit i seen a comodore with a 225 honda and boy was that quiet.

but at the time the etec was what we could afford and we are happy, just cranked over 20hrs on sat nite, so shes still brand new.

cheers mate

ps duhy for tea tonight?

Sun, 2010-06-20 19:03

I think Rod said my deck is slightly larger, but mostly the same otherwise. Do you have the walk through anchoring arrangement?

I think I would have to go Yamaha or Honda 4 stroke if I changed motors, I know eTec have their fans

Electric

Sun, 2010-06-20 20:17

Electric Winch................bastard. Will have to come down to see how it is mounted, although mine isn't bad with the walk through.

My next boat will probably be a Commodore 670. Love them. Have a cousin with a Suzuki 140 on one and WOT is 28 knots, complete bore. Can't even get airborne at that speed.

So I have to ask, I have the abrolhos on my radar for my next boat, what kind of nm range are you getting from your 670/225 combo?

if i dont lean on it to hard we get a bit less than

Sun, 2010-06-20 20:32

a litre a nm.The new model 225 is more quiet and about 20% better economy. If that proves true may look at upgrading in a couple of years. The combo gives me the ability to outrun most of the regular pingers that come out of mindarie.I seam to have a small cult following that chase me all over the ocean.lol

So a full tank plus 100L in cans would be safe for a 4 day trip by the sounds of it. Brilliant.

we took 360 ltrs

Sun, 2010-06-20 21:15

from exxy out to the islands, then up to thevenard out rosily cays back down to the islands then back to exxy.It cost two of us (not including our personal food and alcohol)$1180 to tow the boat from perth to exxy fuel the jerry cans and put about 100 lts in the main tank of the boat, fish for 8 days then back to exxy and tow back to perth. We have the hard top as well so a bit of wind drag behind the car,but far better when on the water. That $1180 is all up not each.

We did just under 400 nm

Mon, 2010-06-21 15:55

on 380 ltrs but some of that was drifting so we work on about 1 ltr per mile. Most days out of here we will get more than a nm a ltr if we just sound for new ground between spots. An average day out of perth we will run on around 60ltrs.Very good for a 7 meter plus boat.

Sun, 2010-06-20 20:28

the dhuie is a ripper!! doesn't have to be a huge fish to be memorable.

We've been working the late arvos and nights till 9pm lately for a bit of success down between Garden & Carnack Is.
