Missing paddler found safe
A SURF skier believed missing off a popular Perth beach has been found at Rottnest Island, about 18km off the coastline.
WA Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said the 58-year-old man had paddled his surf ski from Sorrento beach, in the city's north-west, to the island.
A sea and air search was sparked after the man was reported missing after he failed to return to his car, which was parked at the Sorrento surf club.

ok couple of questions
1. Who pays for the search and rescue?
2. Is it even legal to paddle a surf ski over to rotto?

That was some good news
It sounds like he might have just been having a nice day out on the water.

1) Taxpayers 2) Yes, but
1) Taxpayers
2) Yes, but ONLY if its got everything you need to get a boat out past the usual limit, ie; radio, flares, epirp, anchor, PDF1 etc.
I guess the big question was did he MEAN to go to rotto or perhaps just got caught in an offshore?
