Missing the strikes
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2012-09-29 21:25
Went out from Two Rocks today and didn't bait a hook. only jigged. first serious attempt at jigging. metals and plastics. Used my new jigging outfit from Campbells. Caught a 67 cm amberjack on a elevator jig head and mccarthy plastic (baby elf paddle tail, i think?). got tailed a couple of times, and missed a couple of other strikes on the plastics (just missed the hook). on the metals (Daiwa pirate and Lamble 90g something), i felt quite a few hits on the end of a flutter, just as I started a retrieve, but none stuck. one took the jig and a couple of metres of line, before spitting it.
What am i doing wrong on the strike?

Hey mate I find that at the end of the flutter the weight of the jig feels like a bite as the line tightens you feel a jolt on the line. I think that might be what it is but I'm not positive.

Hey.
Basically. You'll know when you got a bite.
Rod dips and leaps out of your hands. If you don't hang on.
Lot of times. you'll get 'em on the drop too.
Never let it "free fall". always have contact with spool and feel for any touches.
Once it's near. and in area of fish. depth.
Unlike bait. Jigging is a Moving target and they have competition. They just belt it hard. Mostly.
If you miss a lot. try adding a second hook (smaller) to bottom of jig.
Have fun. and build your shoulders and back up. You'll need it.
I go Outrigger canoeing.. Better than any Gym work. and enjoyable with it..

Try putting a split ring on
Try putting a split ring on your jig head and put a assist hook to suit the plastic size

Just keep jigging
like Macka said you will know when you've got a strike.
If your just feeling taps or bumps it could be either small shit fish or the jig itself.
Fish like Dhuies just commit suicide to jigs, not just tap them

If you're just feeling taps - shit fish
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

I did hook a couple of sgt bakers, so thats what it could have been. got the split rings and double hooks so i think it technique not equipment. its the one that ran and then spat that i was really pissed about, because it hit it hard.

not to sure what the general
not to sure what the general idea for drag settings are but ive lost good dhu fish with too much drag and pulled hooks they seem to have a softer flesh so maybe thats the problem with the one that got away????
