not a sparky but

I am not a sparky but it sounds like the battery voltage is low and when the lights are turned on the voltage to the engine computer drops to such a level that problems start.

If you have voltmeter then measure the battery voltage at idle, then at more revs and again with the lights turned on. The alternator may be faulty.

Another possibility is the battery terminals or the earth connection may be corroded and causing volt drop.

We had a similar thing with a Pulsar alternator.

Yeah, I reckon you are on the money with the alternator.

Car stopped yesterday in a service station driveway in the city. Absolutely zero help from the service station (don't know why they use the word  "service") so I went in and replaced battery with new. All good until lights went on.

So my bet is alternator related problems.

Yeah mate definately sounds like charging problems with a healthy alternator you should be able to run the car after starting it with the battery disconnected completely, if you dont have a multimeter to check the voltage output from the alternator

I use  Kris at Stress Less auto electrics. He's done a couple of jobs for me, good price and good job too. But he operates down around the Rockingham area.
