Monster Metro Yellowfin Tuna!
Dad and I planned to do a bit of a bottom bash on thursday, conditions were nice but the fish didnt seem to be feeding, had a few drifts on a couple of old spots for nil.
Another boat decided to drop in on our drift (10 feet away), they were there when we got there but we kept a good distance and fished a few other spots in the area.
Bit annoyed motored away from them, saw a couple of birds flying around and thought i saw 2 diving so decided to chuck a lure out.
2 minutes in the water and had a hookup, in comes a nice salmon around 5kg, not bad we thought , so out the lure went again.
Another 2 minutes later reel screams, this was no salmon... around 300m gone in around 5 seconds.
Came in then played tug of war under the boat, whatever it was it was big and wasnt coming up in a hurry.
Arms were getting a bit sore so handed rod over to dad for a go, around half an hour of fighting and we finally get a glimpse, BIG TUNA!!
Got it to the surface it went ballistic and took off down under the boat for another half hour.
Finally got it up again and sunk the gaff in solid, tail roped it and heaved it aboard, words cannot describe how we were feeling.. 40+kg of solid yellowfin tuna in the boat.
Bled and gutted and on ice, had a couple more drops (wern't game enough to put the lure back out) for nil and headed back to the ramp.
Pictures dont really do it justice, measured 135-140cm with a massive girth.

Shit yeah!
Good call with the trolling decision.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Mate - so awesome.
Very jealous! That's an epic fin for metro.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Freezing
I cryovaced mountains of it whilst overseas 2010-2012. Sashimi was not a good as fresh stuff, although it never is, however tuna steaks still turned out supreme.

Good to hear soupster,
Good to hear soupster, definately some fine eating, did try some sashimi while filleting but didnt really have much of a taste to me.
May well have been over 40kgs, weighed on bathroom scales (my mrs reckons they dont read accurately - HAHA) , definately felt heavier, took two people to move it, not sure if that was because it was awkward but i can tell you it was quite heavy!!

Weight
The weight chart for yft puts a 135 - 140cm fish at 45 - 50kgs so your weight of 40kgs is on the conservative side.

Yeah felt around 45-50kg to me.
Looked huge sitting under the boat, big releif when i sunk the gaff in solid in the gill plate, very tense fight every run i could picture it busting us off or pulling the hooks (hooks were very bent after fight)

Mate thats a metro beast
Dont see many big YFT of metro.
Sashimi yeh!!
With sashimi especially YFT and especially the prized Atlantic bluefin it is the delicate texture that makes it prime. The fishy taste is subtle, but try it with some good quality soy, a little Japanese ginger (I dont like this) and Wasabi to taste and you wont be able to stop eating it (especially if you have 40-50k's of prime fish).
Enjoy

Laser Pro...
...did you upgrade the hooks/rings prior to this battle? Because unless they've changed their process, the typical hardware supplied by Halco is fairly average...certainly not built to withstand that kind of abuse!
Great capture, that's one you won't be forgetting soon!

Nope, lure was straight out
Nope, lure was straight out of the box, found it in the cabin as i didnt bring any lures or anything.
Hooks were a bit bent, was hooked solid in the eye on the middle trebel and the other was in the mouth, probably had 4-5 hooks in it. If it only had one hook on the trebel hooked up i think it would've probably bent out.
