Mulloway hunt
Submitted by Boyce on Tue, 2017-02-21 15:48
Hi guys,
Going after mulloway this weekend and was wondering what the go with wire trace is
Heard rumours that it deters them. Is this true? I typically go for sharks so stick to 400lb 49 strand for most of my rigs.
Also is there a particular bait that works best? I have mullet and tuna heads already but dunno if theyre any good
Any other general info for targeting mulloway is greatly appreciated
Thanks, sharkhunter1

Never use a wire trace with mulla's mate, there's just no need really, and yes they are damn picky. Live baits are my first choice, tailor or even a trump or yellow tail. Mulies if no livies about.

use two snelled circle hooks and 60lb leader.
You'll probably hook in the jaw. They like all the above baits, and are also very fond of fresh gar.

swan river mulloway.
i have only ever targeted mulloway in the swan and sometimes north mole never on the beach but all i can tell you is there is no need for wire at all i use a shimano thunnus 6000 spooled with 30lb braid a 6-10kg spin rod and a 50lb fluro leader with a very small bean sinker running to two snelled circle hooks best bait for mullas would be live squid ,tailor, scalies, bony herring, herring
best dead baits to avoid pickers i would defently go mullet and your tuna heads i would either tie them to a crab net or throw them in for burley
you do not need all this heavy gear for mulloway they are not as hard of fighters as people say you will probarly get 2 -3 good runs and thats it
a 30lb outift is plenty to land a big river king.
also if you plan targeting them in the river any time soon i would start around mosmans area or even more downstream good luck be prepared for some long nights my friend..
wont catch em sitting at home!

No wire mate 100lb mono
No wire mate 100lb mono
They dont fight as hard in the river i was told theres less oxygen due to the muddy bottom, but dont agree they dont fight hard in the surf 20+ kg fish go hard and are very good at using the surf to there advantage there little pin teath will destroy light leader if the baits swallowed
I fish a pananoster rig with 3 ganged6/0 tarpons big fresh fillet baits trevally another option
