My first half decent Sambo

Went out for a fish on Saturday and caught this brute.

Lost two others. One decided to head for the horizon and the fight ended when it found some reef. The other one nearly sent my Stella outfit overboard. My missus yelled that I had a fish on and by the time I looked up the rod holder had exploded into pieces. I dived across the boat and grabbed the rod butt just as it was about to go over and just held on for dear life. Luckily the line was being dragged across the outboard so it snapped. I don't know how long I could have held on as I was lying across my eski and burley bucket, it was quite an awkward position to fight a fish.

So only one fish out of three runs but still some excitement for the day.

This fish had a tag in it. What is the procedure when catching a fish with a tag? Does the number on it need to be given to anyone?

PS. I didn't catch this on the rod in the pic.

Good write up and congrats on a solid fish. Not sure about the tag info; Fisheries might be a starting point.

I was fishing in 12m of water.

He put up a pretty decent fight at first, I thought it was a ray as it was all speed and not thuds or head shakes. As I started to see colour and realised it wasn't a ray the bugger decided to take me on a journey of pain. I tightend up the drag as I didn't want him doing the same as the previous fish but he still took out a lot of line.

I would have liked to have seen how big the one that smashed my rod holder was as he had some serious power to him. I can't wait to get out there again and go toe to toe with this giants. Definately a sport fish and definately worth releasing.

are all of these fish still coming out of the same ground you caught the dhuies? If so, keep that spot secret!!!!!!   What did you catch them on?

well done on the capture.

well done on the capture. decent size for the shallows. good to see you held on to that rod after it smashed the holder. maybe you should replace them with the steel versions to remove that risk again. as far as the tags go Andy Mac should know , send him a pm

I've only got two spots (sad

Mon, 2010-08-02 19:43

I've only got two spots (sad I know) that seem to be doing well. One I've only caught Dhuies at (and a hammerhead and large wobby) and the other has no structure but everytime I go out there I find schools of fish. Don't know what they're hanging around. I just chum up and in come the Sambos, Skippy and Dhu Fish. I thought I saw some other large fish down there, they may have been kingies, who knows, could have been tuna, it's hard to tell when seeing them from the top and about 8m down. I'm sure I saw a large Dhui down their though, it was something big and fat.

I went over a pearler of a lump when cruising between my two spots on Saturday, it went from 20m to 11m and straight back down again so I'm looking forward to checking that one out the next time I go out. It may have nothing on it but you don't know unless you try.

I was getting rid of all my mushed up bait that has been building up in my freezer from different trips so didn't have any really fresh stuff. I think the first one took a Sanmar, the second was on a whole Slimey and the third was on a Boney Herring. All bait was in crappy condition, was mainly using it as the mulies I bought were just falling apart. I prefer using the mulies as burley and slimeys as bait.

Mon, 2010-08-02 20:04

I had a close call with Brad's stella at the Monties while popping last trip, it was one hand for the rod, one holding me in the boat and I wasn't letting go. If you like the sambos (don't we all) give the jigging a crack this Nov/Dec, you'll have a ball.

good to see you having luck

Mon, 2010-08-02 22:19

in close.  We have some great luck out deep but I have been doing well in the 12-15 metre as well.  This is not always the case.  Not an expert  but it seems to have picked up close in when the bait schools hit around 6 weeks ago.  Last time out i caught so many big skippy , i was throwing them back for another day.  Would love to pick up a big sambo in 12 metres........must have been like a freight train! Hopefully, will see you out there mate.  Ben
