Beautiful eating but a bit
Beautiful eating but a bit risky to fillet, best to snip all the spines off first

western Scorpionfish
Yes, spines and gillplates can give you a sting. Painful, not dangerous. Common in our waters. Larger relative, the eastern Scorpionfish, or Red Rock Cod as it is usually known, is good eating. Ours are generally a bit small to be worth the trouble.

Western Scorpion Fish
as stated in posts above..nasty spines that can inflict very painful injuries, as I can attest to . Been a victim at least twice. Some folks call them poor mans crayfish as the flesh is rather tasty. Side cutters are a must if ya gunna attempt to fillet them to remove the spines. The biggest one I have seen was 400mm long.

Tasty
I got told they were called a Gurnard..
Caught 3 on Saturday. Mate said try them so we did tonight. They won't be getting thrown back now and I must say they did have that crayfish flavour they were really nice.

Gurnard are longer and smoother
They have 2 distinctive forward-facing spines on their head, and their pectorals , when extended, are a brilliant colour display. Also good to eat.

By the way
Not picking, but just some advice Travis.
That leader you have is yellow. You might note that the catch rate will increase dramatically with clear leader, especially fluorocarbon.
I certainly would be no expert about different colour leaders at night, but in the past have noticed that coloured leaders (blue, yellow etc) do put some finicky fish right off the bite, bream being the classic example, but have also seen fish turn on lures with coloured leaders.
Hope this helps a little and no criticism intended, just passing on a little knowledge.
