Need advice and tips!

Hi all

New to the forums, I

I have mostly just been fishing/squiding around cockburn sound with a smaller boat but I just recently bought a 19ft fibreglass mastercraft powered by a 90hp Yamaha. The plan is to get in to some decent fishing around five fathom, and  am hoping to hit the FADS. where abouts around 5 fathom have people been going?

My next question comes in at trolling. Trolling for fish what depth lures have people been getting them on? and which types are the go atm. Just basic ones that flash? Poppers? I need to know which kind of lures for which fish and conditions.

Any advice or help would be great!

 Cheers

if your trolling hit up some

if your trolling hit up some rmgs or halcos or sebile deep diver minnows. the rmgs in the king brown and red head work well. but my fav is the chrome pink 7mt diver by halco. just experiment with a load of deep divers and troll at around 15-30m water along drop of and reef for macks, also u can troll them and skirts in the lumo green or red colours (works for me) for dollies and tuna at the fads or west end.

get out just behind the 5

Tue, 2012-03-20 07:47

get out just behind the 5 and have a look around with the sounder. there are plenty of lumps to look at in the 20mtr depth and around. at times there are snapper schooling around there and you will get the odd dhuie . but mainly it will be the smaller species other than pinkies. b/bums are common , kg's can be taken and there would be no shortage of skippy, sand whiting and of cause the old faithful wrasse with the odd flatty thrown in.

the secret is to have a good look around and to see what lumps are holding fish. you can anchor and burley up or just drift. fishing on top of the 5 will result in lots of lost gear if drifting.

good luck out there and you will find in no time you will be going further out looking for the fish

Ok thanks for that, what bait would be advisable? I am using squid at the moment. And is there anywhere between 5 fathom and rotto that is worth fishing?

 calafornian squid is fine.

calafornian squid is fine. fresh slabs of fish are better for larger species but the squid works well. as far as ground goes, there is plenty out there you just got to go looking. get out to the flat coral in the 40's and you should find something out there. when travelling just keep an eye on the sounder. plenty of lumps and some are only small but do hold fish. sometimes the smaller lumps and ledges will hold better fish than larger ones. when trolling just cruise around watching the sounder as this is the way a lot of people find the lumps.main thing you need to learn is to distinguish schools of fish or just a couple of big ones on the sounder

Yeah I'm thinking of getting a new sounder. Not too sure if I'm keen on my current navman 4600. Came with the boat though. And I guess I have got to stop giving my herring away that I catch and keep them for bait. Also got plenty of cockburn squid in the fridge.

if your looking at a new

if your looking at a new sounder i would reccomend the furuno 620 or 585. i know they are not cheap but are easy to use and do a good job. there are so many good ones out there but i like that they are user friendly. i for one am useless with technology and i worked it out nicely. the 620 and 585 from my understanding are almost the same units but the 620 is a smaller screen
