Need help valuing a boat.

Hey fellow wreckers,

I'm looking at buying a boat, not knowing very much i thought i'd throw it to you lads and see what you think. Here's what i know about it:

The Boat:

- 6.2m 2005 Noble Super Vee centre cab

- some cosmetic damage as shown in pics; cracks in perspex shield, bent support where the canopy joins the cab, paint job pretty rough

- hull seems ok, doesn't appear to have any cracks in it.

- carpet is stuffed and needs replacing

- has kill tank and live bait (not plumbed in)

- VHF & Radio

The Motor:

- 200 hp Yammy on the ass with 214 hrs.

- hasnt been run up in over 12 months

- will need a service done on it ASAP

- needs 2 new batteries

- little to no fuel sitting in the tank since last use

Extras:

- VHF and radio with speakers

- deck wash

- electric windlass

- I was told the whole boat has been rewired

- plotter/gps i think a furuno

- boat cover

The Bad:

- Trailer needs replacing, can't even get it to the boat ramp to go for a sea trial. which means i'm up for the cost of a new trailer (approx. $7000 delivered)

- i've been told that the reason they replaced the old motor was because it ended up wrapping itself around the anchor line and semi submerged the boat one day.

- Carpet needs replacing

- an electrical issue with the auto bilge pump

- she's pretty dirty, not nice to look at but will clean up nicely once i spend a bit of time on it.

- motor and boat have been sitting in a dusty shed for over 12 months

- i'm going to have to hire a crane to get it on the new trailer. would like to hear ideas of how to get it on the new one without the crane?

Asking price of $30,000 firm. is this a fair price for this boat? do i have room to bargain and how much?

It is in a remote location with not much buying interest. 6-7 hours drive to get it to where i live.

can't see the pics but sounds like its overpriced by at least 10k for a rough 6.2m hull and a 13 year old motor which hasnt been run in a year.

The things that make up the

The things that make up the price of a boat really are the following:

Hull

  • Ali boats are pretty hardy and easier to check. I'd say look for cracks and corrosion.
  • Carpet can be replaced by a trimmer for $500ish
  • Electrics like pumps and things need testing

Electonics

  • These can make up value it a boat but at $30K I doubt they will be worth much but if it's furuno, happy days because they hold value well and from all accounts have worked really well for ovr 10 years..

Motor and controls (Can be as much as 40% of the value)

  • Can be valued at up to $24K if low hour 4 stroke with latest electronic inteface. You haven't mention 4 stroke or 2 stroke. 2 Stroke are worth as much as half the value less
  • If cleaned and flushed after the last use it should be fine but worth a mechanical check. Diagnostic and compression test.

Trailer

  • Can be up to $15K for a good braked AU made unit
  • It's not that hard to slide a boat off a trailer and onto a new one. I did this in my front yard with some ropes when I reconditioned my trailer. It helps to have rigging skills. If you have soft grass and some points to tie onto you can just pull the trailer out from underneath and then just winch/reverse it up onto the new trailer. Getting the new trailer set up correctly to suit the hull will be the hardest part.
  • Best bet would be to find someone with this hull to measure off their trailer and copy..

Extras

  • Good electric anchor winch and wiring installed $1500 to $2200 depending on type
  • VHF and wiring $350
  • Deck wash installed and plumbed $300 - $600

You didn't post a link which would help. Also the age of the hull and motor and the type /model of motor. If it's a 4 stroke and less than 5 years old at those hours it could be a very good deal at $30K. I don't know specifics about Yamaha but they are a popular 4 stroke choice...

Too much...

Mon, 2018-03-26 16:05

I picked up a 2003 6.1m Stessl (Honda 135 4stroke) for $20k with a similar story but on a good condition road master trailer.

Full rebuild including paint, canvas, anchor winch, motor work over (leaking oil seal that cost $3k in labour to get too) cost me $12-13k but a shed load of my time.

When it was time to sell, I sold it for $33k in 2 days.

I don't think you want to be paying any more than $20k without a trailer. Low hrs 4 stroke Yami 200 might bump the price 3-5k if clean.

Why would you spend $30k on a boat you can't see in the water?

Stale fuel could have ruined the fuel system

Cable guy can't fix a bilge pump?

6.2m spitfire trailer is under $6k

If you want to transfer old to new then tow the new trailer to pickup point, hire a tilt tray tow wagon man to meet you there, tilt tray pulls the boat/trailer up from the stern, secure boat and trailer via straps to truck, cut the winch post off, have tow wagon man wangle the tray down so you can winch only the boat onto the new trailer.

Noble boats are made in China aren't they?

As a non runner I would think at $20K it might be reasonable. $25k if mechanical inspection passed with flying colours.

You're doing all the work to extract the value so the buyer shouldn't expect you to pay a premium.

P.S. also can't see pics.

Noble?

Mon, 2018-03-26 17:09

Wasn't there some big issues with those after the manufacturing went offshore? No expert here, but IIRC they were a good design and pretty well built here, but then went offshore and went to crap, some real horror stories. I have no idea whether a 2005 would be a locally or offshore built, or I may actually have everything completely arse about. Do some research, google is your friend.

Reality

The reality is that you’re looking at a hull that’s been submerged and a motor of unknown status and reliability.  I’d say $15-20k max.  You could be $20-30k into this thing at the drop of a hat just to get it on a trailer and running.

Semi-submerged

if it hasn't been done already, you are looking at replacing every bit of wiring, including battery cables switch panels, battery switches, circuit breakers. On top of all the defects you have told about or are obvious to the eye. It starts to add up. And 6K for a trailer for a 6.2 m boat?   That  would be very cheap, new, and certainly would need to be under 1999kg GTM. I just paid more than double that, although mine goes 2700kg GTM--but remember, if you have dreams of "taking it away up north" it will be loaded up and will definitely be over the non-breakaway braked limit.
