New deck install in the tub

I decided it was time to replace the main deck in the boat after I noticed the port side passengers were bobbing up and down when the boat slapped onto the ocean. I knew it was going to need doing when I purchased it but was having to much fun fishing to worry about it. Now that weve had some crap weather Im glad I got stuck into it. A mate and I ripped into it and we were amazed to the poor workmanship underneath and now no why it had cracked. When the previous owners had the boat they had the new Merc fitted up only to have an issue with the boat getting out of the hole in a decent time frame. They took the boat back to the people that they had purchased it from. The builders proceeded to cut a great big F*&%ing chunk of deck out and inspect the flotation foam for water injestion. They thought that if the foam was water logged that it may be adding extra weight. After the foam proved to be ok they then realised that they had installed the wrong prop size. It was then the dodgy workmanship came into it. So anyway things aside the damage was done and here I am now fixing it the proper way. The original beams were only 100mm wide X 15mm thick and they had used some sought of pine. After some measuring and a bit of pre-thought and a few sherberts with the mates we came up with a game plan.

If we are going to do this lets make the most out of the under deck space and build in not one but two below deck eskies. With the way the supports are we were able to have a split esky each side of centre and this would keep the fish separate from the food.Total volume is around 160L. We decided to beef up the support beams 200mm X 30mm thick with the marine grade board and nestle a 10mm deck on top all coated in fibreglass. While Im at it I have added another sheet of glass to the inside of the hull. The eskies will be lined with insulation and the lids will be a hingeless setup so that there is easy access from all sides. Here is the progress so far.

Looking forward to seeing the progress, also good work brainstorming over a few sherberts too, people always think better after a few or more than a few! haha

What a Job

Wed, 2009-05-27 09:55

Mate been there myself and what a job. I had to replace the beams and all. Done all of the cutting and sanding myself then handed it to chivers to relay the galss.

Was all worth it at the end great boat and strong as.

The boat broke its moring and was pounded on the beach during a cyclone not through poor workmanship.

I dont know how those guys do it working with F/Glass everyday.

Anyway good luck and enjoy the hoby.

Always enjoy pulling my own rig apart , just to see how well things are made , looks like a mission on the glass but interesting to see how it all goes together,  one tip if not to late install some flexy pvc pipes front to rear of boat for future rewire ,sounder or steering changes as always handy for cabling access,  keep us updated

after doing a full reno on our boat i know exactly what you are going through lol i have a couple of suggestions that may give you some food for thought! i have done the same thing only in smaller scale i dont know what you have in mind but i used 50mm fridge panel to line my eskies i bought this from kalamunda ice works on welshpool road they have tonnes of offcuts and the best part is they only charged me 10 dollars for what i needed lol i have an esky around 60 litres that all i had space for. i also bought aluminium angle for all the internal corners of the esky i bought this from salvage and general in kelmscott on gillam drive they have plenty of offcuts and all up i think cost me 15 dollars.you cant buy a decent esky anywhere for 25 dollars plus a few rivets ant a bit of silicon lol another thing i did was put in a 15 dollar bilge pump from whitworths this is the best thing out i can easily empty the water and makes cleaning it easy just grab the hose and wash away, turn pump on and bang clean esky! anyway hope this helps and good luck. adam

Top deck is on and eskie lids are done. Now its upto the glassing. Under deck has been filled with expanda foam. Once it has hardened it can be trimmed off. Should have it all finished in time for a Monday fish. Tez
