New Jigger

I've been wanting to try jigging for a while and I've spent a fair bit of time reading this forum and gathering information. I was down in Gero a couple of weeks ago and picked up a new rod, N S Blackhole Torque Magic Eye PE2 and some jigs in the 40g to 150g sizes. I thought that I'd start of with the light gear because the waters off Carnarvon are quite shallow, 20m or less untill you get closer to the islands.

Last Friday I headed out to see if I could catch something on a jig. Looks like a good place to start....

Fourth or fifth drop and I was onto a larger 90cm model, saw the bottom of the spool a couple of times but the little jigger held up well.

Yeh, a few close calls with a coral bommie but that little rod has some pulling power for its size.

The school of trevally moved on and I tryed a few other spots, ended up with small or just size demersals, 12 pinkies, 1 spangled and a rankin for the day.

Jig used is an Ima Gun Leaf 40g

Good work mate,  well done, although I wouldn't leave the jig hooked through the guide like that.

No worrys mate, the jigs come off and the hook goes into the reel seat when traveling. The rod is too expensive for that stuff.

Headed out on Saturday to a different spot with the missus and her boy. Once again the small pinks and a rankin were on the chew. Best catch was this cod, hit the jig about 4m from the bottom in 12m of water.

The jig is a Shout Lighten 50g.

Great Job there Tony! Seeing your post brings back my light jigging days....

Light jigging has to be one of my favourite form of jigging! With thin line and shallow water, the fight and feel is somehow amplified and you can feel every headshake from the fish. Sadly, not many people adore this form of jigging in Perth. Many seem to prefer to head straight to the deep to chase something more substantial. My PE2 rod and some 20-40 pcs of light jigs (40g-60gs)are collecting dust at the moment ...

Ima Gun is one of the best light jig available, they flutter on the drop and dart seductively when jigged. They are so effective and I lost a few already to some unknown critters.

Is that a Stradic that you are using with an after market knob ?

The Ima Gun's work great, a few different colours and sizes are on the shopping list for the next trip to Perth, Caprice Kids look good too.

Its a Stradic FJ 4000 with a jigging master 35mm power knob, I had to make a shim stack out of nylon tube and some small stainless washer to make it fit. It works fine and is much better than the flat paddle handle it came with.

The Stradic belongs on my soft plastics snapper rod, I'm only using it for jigging to get a feel for what would suit the N S rod. I can see a Stella 4000 in the near future.

nice fish and nice photos.  i am a jigging newbie too, but only a small sambo so far from one serious day when i withstood the urge to bait up.  i am looking forward to shallow water jigging at monkey mia when i head up there on the annual family holiday in april, and then out off the blowholes at quobba in may with the boys fishing week!

Plenty of shallow water out

Wed, 2012-10-17 11:03

Plenty of shallow water out from Monkey Mia, 40 gram jigs would be worth a shot but soft plastics would be better. I haven't jigged at Quobba yet but big plastics work well up there for bottom fish, loosing jigs to mackies can be a problem tho. You could wire rig them but I've found that it reduces hits from the bottom fish.

Wed, 2012-10-17 18:05

Fished a lot out of monkey mia, being going there annually since 2006.  always fished bait up until last year when i started using plastics.  found that the cod absolutely smash them!

Headed over to the islands

Sat, 2012-10-27 08:04

Headed over to the islands yesterday to try some deeper water, I used my Catalina 4020PE H reel on the N S Black Hole for a bit more pulling power.

First drop of the day and I'm on.

Sat, 2012-10-27 08:17

I lost alot of jigs to toothy critters and quite a few good fished got sharked, turned out to be an expensive day. I did manage to land a few though including this Shark Mac on a Ima Gun 40G. Note the scares on the back half of the fish, just as I was about to tail grab it a big cod swallowed it tail first and took it back to the bottom and then let go.

I should used to fish them

Fri, 2013-09-20 13:32

I should used to fish them overseas on light jigs 40-60g in less than 20m of water. They often spooled you and pretty hard on PE2 outfit.
