My c/c's 5.8m (ally) and

Sun, 2008-05-25 21:30

My c/c's 5.8m (ally) and very flighty in the bow, so went with the lightest motor available...a 90hp etec. The dealer told me that the 115 would be the ideal motor but the 90 was already 30 kilos heavier than my old setup (twin Yamaha 40's) and I couldn't justify the extra expense or weight with regards to trim and distribution on the trailer.

Happy with the performance...32 knots at 5000 revs, but I think it may be mispropped. Lots of punch coming out of the hole but unable to get more than 5000 revs at WOT.

A bit noisier than 4-strokes when at idle but on a par once the revs come up. Fuel consumption is a bit better than 1 nautical mile per litre...that's over an average day with WOT in some places, cruising on about 3500-4000 in others, and a fair degree of trolling at around 1200 to 1500.

Been back for warranty work once (faulty injector) but I've given it a decent flogging....87 hours in five months. Oh, and being a two stroke it does consume oil, and it's expensive oil at that ($60/gallon), but it doesn't consume very much of it. Just finished my first gallon over maybe 1000 litres of fuel, so it's somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1 litre oil for every 200 to 250 litres of fuel.

Anyway, that's my take on it...again, the main reason I chose the etec was cause of the weight factor...I think the Suzi was around 40kg heavier, for example.

etec

Take a good long look at the etec mate, a lot lighter than 4 strokes & on par economy wise with the performance of a two stroke.

Etec would be my choice if I was buying new again Wink

Etec for me

Sun, 2008-05-25 22:46

Got a 115 etec on my plate 5.5m but I would actually have preferred the 90 because of the weight factor. Got 300hrs on it over two years and have had no problems. I certainly use a little bit of oil but not so much that I actually notice it. One bottle probably would do me for a week long trip at Exmouth so about 450l of fuel

Staal - ETEC

Mon, 2008-05-26 07:57

Oh nooooooooooo LOL Yell

This could turn into four million, five hundred and sixty seven thousand, two hundred and fifty third 2 stroke vs 4 stroke thread.

(rolling eyes emoticon)

Staal - can't talk about the Etc, but I have a 115 Opti and there is NO oil spell (and YES (tongue poke) there IS oil in the reservior).

motors

Mon, 2008-05-26 12:06

I speak to a lot of people with lots of varying motors, all I can say is 4 stroke all the way.  With the ever increasing price of petrol, the cost advantages of 4 strokes are going to come out big time in the near future!

petrol

Mon, 2008-05-26 13:50

Not to get away from the original question (oh, why do I do this YellLaughing) - I'm VERY happy with the fuel economy with the Opti Adam - the opti actually came out very marginally on top in an impartial controlled test. Mind you that extra was pretty much insignificant. The point here - there was no big difference between the Opti and 4s. It's the petrol to drag the boat down to Albany that hurts LOL.

Etec has a small amount of oil smell

Mon, 2008-05-26 13:42

hard to say what I would repower with if I ever bothered. Weight of the four stroke is an issue, and I also debate the whole reliability thing in remote areas that a lot of people push. Bottom line - pick a colour and set a price range and see who wants your business, that is what I would do, as I just can't really see much diff between ETEC or a good four stroke in running costs once you add, servicing vs fuel and oil.

Suzuki has got a 5 year warranty at present which may sway me and I have heard very little probs about Yammie 4 strokes but know a few guides who have had big issues with the suzuki's

Warranty

Mon, 2008-05-26 16:38

Suzuki, mercury and honda all have 5 year warrantys.
I personally wouldnt touch an e-tec, I hear too many horror storys about them. With the 2st v 4st at the moment we sell 6 optimax to 1 four stroke. We have a few customers with them in remote cape york and love them. My pick would be a yamaha 4st or a mercury, and I see alot of outboards being a mechanic.
cheers andy
