non-daylight savings time

well its over again , back to normal time

i dont know how many others had this prob but i went to bed later than normal and woke up at 7:15 thinking i had had a bit of a sleep in , only to find out half hour later that i forgot to set the time on the clocks back 1 hour . Damn i didnt get a sleep in it was realy only 6:15 when i woke up

so what does everyone think of daylight savings?

i personally like it but it should have finnished  a month ago and started a month earlier

it would be interesting to know others thaughts on this

Not For Me

Sun, 2009-03-29 07:36

I'm a morning person, so I'd prefer the light early in the morning, rather than at night - especially when heading out fishing. Just my personal opinion, if it's adopted by the majority, then I won't loose any sleep over it (well, maybe 1 hour at the commencement Tongue out).

I agree with Allrounder though, I think going through to the end of March is too long. It's too dark in the mornings.

Also, I think the referendum needs to be more than just if you want it or not, we should take the (expensive) opportunity to at least guage the start and end dates as well.

I thought it was great. loved the daylight hours later in the evenings great for the old gathering around the BBQ and so on.

But with Skin cancer being such an issue these days its really just think its not the brightest move considering there are many people out there that cannot look after them selves letter lone there young.

Ill be voting yes!!!!!!!

Its a bit late to go home early.

Sun, 2009-03-29 08:53

I will take today as an opportunity to have a line in the water at sundown and still get home at a reasonable time for dinner and early night ready for another day at the orrofice tomorrow. Missus can start walking the dog again in the morning..We can get back to doing business with our Asian partners in their time and not ours....Why is it so important that we adjust our clocks to suit Eastern States hours?

I was a YES voter and have been for years but I think the problem with voting yes is March will stay in. I don't think the pollies will remove March as they'd really prefer it to be extended to April also to keep up with over East.

Working late?

Mon, 2009-03-30 09:03

There's normally council laws that state you can't mow lawns or work on building sites after a certain time (from memory 6.30pm). You might want to check that out.

Also, Luke isn't going to be that young forever... When he's 15 you'll be wanting more light so he can do exactly that.

Needs to be at least 2 months shorter.

It also has many workers going to work inside the same traffic window later in the period which overloads the road infrastructure to some extent.

When you have small kids...

Sun, 2009-03-29 10:59

...harder to put them to bed when it gets dark later. Not a big deal during summer holidays but when they're at school before or after that it's a hassle trying to get them to sleep a normal amount of hours.

Used to do my craypots before work prior to DST. Now you can't legally pull 'em before 0600 so that was the end of that. Fortunately there's still diving!

We've had some pretty bad mossie issues here in the Peel Region over the past couple of years...extra hour of light in the evening means an extra hour of biteys! As far as that extra hour to get the boat out in the arvo...seabreeze usually cans THAT idea most of the time!

As you can see, I'm against it, but regardless of whether you want it or not, it was voted down three times in previous referendums and they still had to jam it down our throats. That's NOT a democracy, that's bringing in stuff whether the people want it or not....

And if they're so big on keeping in line with the Eastern States, why are there two or three public holidays (Foundation Day, Queens Birthday, and I think Labour Day?) that are different from over there? As far as Asia goes, we're only one or two hours different from them anyway, since they are more north than west or east!

The Asia scenario is an interesting one. Probably as relevent.

Really if business needs it that bad then the relevent businesses should start their staff half an hour or an hour earlier if really neccessary. Even NSW could go an extra half an hour with their staff to make up the difference.

30 minutes isnt going to affect people too much with todays technology.

WA is diiferent to NSW that the light is less relevent in WA.

Personally I think DS will be dead once gain.

What are the applicable businesses that need the syncronisation?

We wouldn't have such a debate going on now. Time and again WA has voted NO. These feelings were ignored and time was adjusted as a trial. We don't need an excuse NOT to have it IMO it should never have been introduced against the wishes of the majority. No excuses for me, I just think it sucks.

I am not really for it or

Sun, 2009-03-29 19:22

I am not really for it or against it, there are things about it that i love and things about it that suck for me. But in the referendum i will probabley vote yes, even though as stated many times before i wish it would end a month earlier.

Just on Auslobsters view:

"As you can see, I'm against it, but regardless of whether you want it or not, it was voted down three times in previous referendums and they still had to jam it down our throats. That's NOT a democracy, that's bringing in stuff whether the people want it or not...."

I believe this democracy at it best. I am 27 and have never been able to vote on the subject of daylight savings as i have never been old enough to. So i think it is good to have these refurendums every decade or so to see how the general public of that generation what to live their lives. In saying that though i do believe if it does get in there should still be votes later on to see if it is no longer wanted. Just because something is voted in as yes doesnt mean everyone will want it forever like wise just beacuse something has been voted no the past few time doesnt mean everyone will never want it. The vote is there to gauge our societies changing views and wants for that period of time.

Just my political view for the month, feel free to disregard :)

Referendums

Mon, 2009-03-30 11:11

A referendum should give a once and for all final decision, not having to go through the whole rigmarole over and over again. Its too bad if you missed a chance to have a vote on it.I wouldn't mind a vote on WA joining the rest of what was Australia or the referendum on seceding from the federation in the early days but its not going to happen.

The same goes for the latest one for extended shopping that is going to be ignored and Sunday shopping introduced. Its not hard to see why the general public has a great mistrust of politicians

Definitely voting YES

Sun, 2009-03-29 22:11

Definitely voting YES !

Being dark by 6.30pm tonight was hard to take..

I prefer having my kids going to school in the morning when it's on average 5-7 degrees cooler during DLS.

Coming home the hour earlier makes bugger all difference, because the temperature is generally dictated by the Freo doctor coming in.

Did some research into the afternoon temps, after reading on some blogs how many people were whinging about kids coming home from school in the hotest part of the day.

Sure, on some days it was marginally warmer at 3.00pm DLS time than it would have been on non DLS, but across the board there was stuff all difference. In fact in most cases it was marginally cooler at the conclusion of school, as the sea breeze was already in.

Personally I'd like to see DLS in 12 months of the year !

Might be a bit of a struggle in the middle of winter, would still be dark at 0800am Surprised, but at least it wouldn't be dark by 5.30pm !

I can hear the morning beachside cappucino sipping whinging brigade already.......

Ahh.... until the end of October when we reset the clocks again..... I can't wait Cool

LOL.

I'm all in favour of some of the infrastructure changes you mention. I would also like to sit at the football in a seat that was large enough to accomadate my knees and my (not so large) backside. Unfortunatly, this state is governed by a creton who advocates doing nothing and spending diddly squat in times when we really should be investing in infrastructure. The treasurer is still intoxicate by the smell of female stuff on seats LOL. But hey; we still need to spend money interogating the community about an issue that has already, on several occasions, been laid to rest.

I have lived in WA for most of my life. I have also lived in Sydney and experience the YES YES YES GO GO GO life. LOL I like Perth the way it is. It's clean, pretty well thought out and is just a great place IMO.

It's a bit of the old FIFO in my mind.

Goodbye DSL

Dont you just hate buggering around with time twice per year, for what ,kids to spend more time in the sun getting an extra dose of radiation. Last time [and only time] I rode the train, I recon I was the only punter to pay for the ride. Talk about free transport. Mined you It dosnt pay to have money in your pocket around the trains because there is a fair chance It will become someone elsers after they mug you. $650 cost for every man woman and child in this state for one percent of the population to take a mostly free ride.  How about some hopsitals or new schools for most of us to enjoy not just the 1%for trains to Mandurah.

Yes

Will be voting Yes, works well for me.  Even though my mates dislike it for the getting up early/dark for work, they do love the extra hours to go fishing afterwards.

Politics...

Wed, 2009-04-01 20:34

...I finally realised a long time ago that neither Party is out to help any of us; one mob is there purely to keep itself in power and the other's sole function is to constantly berate and rag the first one. THAT, my friends, is where most of your hard-earned really goes.

One final point...it's a pretty good bet that once DST gets voted in, it will be in for ever.

Makes me wonder how many Yes

Wed, 2009-04-01 20:55

Makes me wonder how many Yes voters have come over from the eastern states to rape WA during the mining boom and push house prices through the roof.  Then want to bring thier bad habits (daylight savings) with them.Sealed

I was dead against it before but now I couldnt really give a f@#ck.
