NW Creek Fishing Advice/Help

Gday, been creek fishin up north for a couple of years now and still havent really caught anything worth writing home about. Only had the boat option for a year now and still havent caught anything except Jacks and stinkin cattys! I reckon I have read and researched just about everything there is for Creeks but still cant get into anything different. Just wondering if some ppl might be able to give me some advice/info on catching/targetting Blak Jews, Threadies and barra. What ground to look for, what depths. How much depth change makes for a deep hole, as i am thinking 1m+. How far up the creeks is worth fishing? Is the area towards the mouth more productive then further up? What type of baits etc.

I have been fishing mainly in the Ashburton, Fortesque and Balla Balla systems.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as i am getting frustrated!!!!!

Thanks

I’m not claiming to be the

I’m not claiming to be the best creek fisherman, but I know a bit and I have found the most important question isn’t necessarily where to fish but when… especially for barra. I have had most my luck first thing in the morning and on a dropping tide into the low. The thing to look at with holes is that as long as it traps the fish in on the low, it should hold a fish. Next time you’re out try getting stuck in a hole with a low tide around 9am. Troll around some halco or classic lures, or throw in a live mullet kick back with a beer and you should find a fish. (the beer is important as I always seem to get runs just as I crack a fresh coldie.) hope this helps mate.

Cheers Webby.

Definately something with strikes and fresh beer! Also sleep.....done a couple of all nighters and just when you start to get to sleep BAM a run!!! Or a fresh sanga!

So the holes should be fairly big if you can troll them hey? I only have one spot that drops from 2-3m to 5-6m that would be big enuf to troll through. Is 2m on the shallow side too deep?

Cheers

forget about the Ashburton

forget about the Ashburton unless all your interested is muddies and jacks. There is barra there but not worth the effort in my oppinion when there's much better creeks further north. Also, I'd be doubtful if there were black jews there in any good numbers to target.

From my experience the best spots for black jews are deep holes... as deep as you can find. Big holes adjacent to rock bars are awesome.

For barra, any hole on low tide that holds a decent amount of water generally will produce fish. If it's large enough you can troll 3 foot divers around and usually pick up fish. If it's a really small hole cast a livie out and wait for the action.

I honestly couldn't tell you specifically how to target threadies as they're usually always a by catch for me when targeting barra. They come up on livies and trolled lures. I have had some success targeting threadies to 85cm casting soft plastics into schools of fish chasing jelly prawns but I've only seen it happen a few times and only in a certain locations. I remember getting over 20 on plastics in one session once.

Balla Balla

camped at Balla Balla few years back. I has some success casting minnows of the banknear the boat launching area- caught small spaniards etc. didn't fish at night but there were some very big fish smashing up the bait schools.

If i went back i would be getting some live mullet with a throw net and throw a couple of lines out and hold on

Try the rock bar to left of the boat ramp heading out to sea on the turn of tide ,Big black jew are often caught there on mullet slabs and live bait, not a place for braid as there are plenty of sharp rocks down below ,also at the mouth its worth a troll past the mangroves as there a barra in amongst them.Hope it helps but it not secret in the pilbara

cleaverville has a nice big hole at the base of the cliff opposite the capark area.  when you go to Balla Balla, be aware that there IS at least 1 croc there, mate saw him when launching his boat late arvo, estimates around 3.5 - 4m long
