Ocean drive

G'day fellas, pretty sure this might have come up before but will ask again. We are heading north next month for the annual trip. Because I live close to the city was thinking of heading up the freeway and then north on ocean drive all the way to the end where it meets the Brand. Will save a detour heading out Guilford way etc. Thoughts? We will leave around 5.30 am so will be nigh on daylight when we hit Ocean drive to avoid roos.

Ocean drive
I prefer it to the Brand Hwy. Much more to see, but can be slow if you get stuck behind slow moving vehicles. Not as many places to overtake as the Brand. Jurien Bakery is a good place to stop for a pie for brekky and take it down to the foreshore park for some scenery while you chew.

2nd that
If you're happy to take the chance of getting stuck behind a caravan doing 70km then it is a much nicer drive. Can mean a slow start to an already long trip though.
I'm normally happy to take the 20 minute detour down Gnangara road and get on the way North.
Either way, enjoy the trip and drive safe :)

I did it twice when towing.
I did it twice when towing. Won't do it again. Brand Highway for me. Not towing, I'm happy to take the scenic route. Yep, and the pie is good !

It's a nice drive
Much nicer than the Brand, although a bit more hilly so might be a pain if you are towing a boat.

Gin Gin turnoff
If you do the Gin Gin turn off, head in about 10kM? and turn left down Orange Springs road, follow it till you see the Brand Hwy turn off, brings you out near Regans Ford cutting off about 12-15km.
I prefer the coast road, as gives you something to look at and no problems with roadtrains though sometimes you do get caught up behind a slow caravan. Leaving early means you will miss most of them anyway.
Roos are nearly non existent but still keep an eye out for cattle at night round Carnarvon, not as many as before the rains but you never know [and I don't want a call to say tow me in please!!]

Cheers John, we'll be there in the arvo for a beer mate and some footy banter ;) . I like the idea of missing some road train traffic.

Road
The shortcut from Wanneroo Rd to Regans Ford is turn right onto Gingin Brook Rd left onto Cowalla Rd then right onto Orange Springs Rd.

If you can get to brand hwy
If you can get to brand hwy before 10am via coast Rd you'll be fine. Nomads still packing up. otherwise it's torture when they all sit nose to arse.
Bastard should also be mentioned

Road trains are better than
Road trains are better than the grey nomads imo. I like to sit on 100kays when driving north or south. If up early enough I would go ocean drive. If leaving gentleman hours I would go brand highway. I am coming from Mandurah. If you good overtaking power the coast road is okay except after leeman which is only about 70kays till the brand hwy I think.

I take the brand every time.
I take the brand every time. Fantastic now all the nomads take the coast road and far less Roos when the suns goes down.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Just done it
Just did it last Thursday. Had a few early morning travellers to deal with, but no problems really and able to travel at 110. Not towing anything though and didn't see a roo anywhere. Hopefully will be the same tomorrow arvo when heading home :-)

The Caltex servo on the tee junction was flat out with about 20 cars lined up for most of the day today with all the school kids parents heading back south for school on Monday, sure glad its no me having to drive up or down over the next few days
