When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Great photos mate

Wed, 2012-06-13 11:46

I met up with Sherbie at Mindarie yesterday and there is quite a bit of damage down there with stones all over the road etc. The disabled platform is fenced off and looks like it was headed for the drink. I may cruise down there for another look this arvo.

Vince can you confirm "the tornado" wasn't the reason those rocks were on the road as he was obviously in the area

The platform was fenced off & sagging before the storm Vince, not that the storm didn't do it more damage mind you. It's been assessed as no longer being safe & was closed off. Currently there are no funds or plans to build another one. Perhaps a good cause for FW members to get behind.

So who funds these things????

Wed, 2012-06-13 17:39

That platform was put there so people with disabilities could hang a line in (at least I think it was). If it's a hazard (which it is) it should either be repaired immediately or taken down. A bit of tape and a rough fence will not stop people trying to fish off it.

As far as I know it's up to

Wed, 2012-06-13 17:48

As far as I know it's up to the local council to allocate the funding. I don't know if Fisheries has any involvement in it at all but they might have. Without a bit of community pressure though it's likely that nothing will be done to replace it. All they will probably do is rip it down when they get around to it.

I agree that it should be repaired or removed immediately but you know what local councils are like. There were two blokes fishing off it a couple of weeks ago (fenced off then) while I was up there. Looked like a death trap then, let alone how it must look after the storm.

Ok I have connections with Mandarie Regional Council.

I'll check it out mate. If someone gets hurt regardless of fencing and tape they will have some answering to do for it.

Let me know what you find out

Wed, 2012-06-13 18:56

Let me know what you find out Vince, especially if they plan to rebuild it or not (if you do find that out). I've got disabled kids & am involved with a couple of organisations that specifically provide fishing trips & equipment for disabled fishers. If there are no plans to rebuild the platform perhaps I can speak to some other members about raising some funds &/or getting a petition going. It would be a shame to have thier access limited more than it already is.

OK. I have connections there also

Not wanting to name drop but I have worked in that field for a number of years and share your concern. Can you tell me if that platform was specifically built for people with disabilities? If so it needs to be restored. Have you heard of an organisation called TADWA and Disabled Sports (excuse my poor refernece to the second).

Wed, 2012-06-13 21:37

I'm keen to help if I can, I have a boy with special needs and he has had some help from TADWA. Would suggest if no funds can be found from the council or state govt, perhaps Variety might be able to help?

Agree we will need to make some noise about it. Sorry for the thread hijack, maybe we need to start a new thread on this?

I agree on the Hihjack

We need to take this offline for a while. Not withstanding that however it is a Fishwrecked initiative and we will bring it back in some shape or form.

Please feel free to PM me as I am in a good position to help here and I want to.
