Take it to a radiator joint

Sun, 2010-06-06 12:30

Take it to a radiator joint and they will do a gas check.

They put a thing onto your radiator and it tells you if there are exhaust gasses in your radiator. is it is then its a head gasket. if you ask em nicely it wont cost you anything.

yep sounds like head gasket

Sun, 2010-06-06 16:27

yep sounds like head gasket leaking exhaust gas into cooling system......it then pressurises the system forcing coolant into expansion bottle/header tank and out the overflow as you are driving along. Gurgling sound could be bubbles of exhaust gas in the expansion bottle.

get the cheque book out....

Had similar issues

Sun, 2010-06-06 19:49

One with the landcruiser and it ended up being a head gasket. Other was with the daughters commodore and thought the worst (head gasket)... Took it to get the sniffer test as cudbfishing mentioned and test was negative.

Ended up being a small crack in the radiator tank (hidden behind a mounting block).

Best advise is (As cudbfishing said) take it to a radiator place, or mechanic, and get the relevant tests done before it gets worse.

Cheers,
David

before you go to a mechanic

Sun, 2010-06-06 20:57

before you go to a mechanic check the oil for any milky looking substance on the dipstick and also look on the radiator cap for any oily residue. they are 2 easy ways to check without spending money to get it checked

Also try

Sun, 2010-06-06 23:04

Removing the oil filler cap when the engine is warm and look for the same milky looking substance Russ mentioned. If you know anyone with a compression tester this "could" also give you an idea if a head gasket is blown but it depends on where the split in the gasket is.

Unfortunately the cruiser had none of the above, or The Faulkner's, symptoms but the radiator sniff test proved the worst.

Good luck scottland and hopefully it's only something minor.

David

You can do the head gasket

Mon, 2010-06-07 11:16

You can do the head gasket without getting oil in your water or water in your oil, but its usually easy to see. Depends on where its cracked. Test will tell all.
